Painting Doors using HVLP

I'm building french doors for my house and need some recommendations on paint.  Unfortunately I painted the doors initially with Benjamin Moore Impervo Oil using an foam roller which did not turn out well.  The paint was old and the resin appears to have separated causing a poppy-seed finish.. My fault ...  After re sanding, I've decided to use my Fuji HVLP system.  Any recommendations on a lacquer that can be tinted to match Benjamin Moore White Dove color?  Or should I just use Benjamin Moore Adv. Water Borne with a large needle?  Thanks for the suggestions!

I'm going to be spraying some builtins in the near future and have settled on using this, though not used it yet:
http://www.tikkurila.com/decorative...feelings_furniture_paint_semi-matt.2558.shtml

It seems to be the waterborne paint of choice for kitchen painters in the UK due to the quality of finish and how durable it is. Only downside I can see in theory is that it has a recoat time of 16 hours so no possibility of getting two coats on in one day.

Interesting ... I believe its a similar product to Benjamin Moore Satin Impervo which is sold in the states.  This may be my best option with respect to spraying the color white dove?  Hopefully the cleanup is MUCH easier than the older Impervo (Oil) paint.  Although I would have though a tintable laqueur would be easier to spray ....

Thanks

In my opinion, I would be worried about compatibility with the oil and solvent lacquer, if I read that right. The solvents may be too hot for the oil, or not. The water based finish may not adhere and curdle if put on too heavy. It may be much about nothing but I have had enough finish failures in the last 35 years to be cautious. Why not hit with oil again?

First 2 are BM Select Pearl finish. I think the last one is SW Pro Classic. All shot wait a Fuji.

I made 2 videos public, neither are edited. I have a few more, not sure if I'll make them public.

[member=4105]tjbnwi[/member] - Thank you for the videos - Do you have a preference between the BM and SW paints.  From the videos, My understanding is that the BM extender worked better when used with BM Regal Select paint.  I also have a better understanding of achieving 4 mil thickness.  Whats your opinion on using BM Advance with an extender?  I'll be spraying on top of a lightly sanded Impervo (Oil) paint.  Thanks for the help - Looking forward to more videos .. Please.

SW - Pro Classic
SW - Kem Aqua Plus White
BM - Select
BM - Advance
BM - Satin Impervo

Too many paint options  [unsure] -- The only requirement is to match the existing trim of White Dove.. Although It would be a huge plus if it was easy to clean up. I have fuji 4 stage with most of the needle sizes.

I use SW more often. I shot the Regal Select to help a member here through an issue he was having. I had to shoot it to understand it.

Yes, the BM Extender which is acrylic worked better, the Enduro is propylene glycol. Enduro works great in KA+ White products.

I shoot KA+ White tinted to match BM Dover White. Looking for pictures of some casework shot in place with it.

Many thanks for the videos - Very helpful. I'm off to the SW store tomorrow morning in search of  KA+

That Kem Aqua Plus White requires butyl cellosolve for thinning and mixed with water for clean up but the only place I see that is online.  Is that where you get it from or do you use something else instead?

I found this page about the product but I'm wondering what that device pictured with two cans sitting on top of it?  Looks like two burners but it looks like it's made of plastic!!

I'm the fogger Tom helped a lot. Because of his sharing of his knowledge and expertise I have been successfully spraying BM Regal Select and BM Advance.
If you plan on using BM advance, do not use BM extender with it, they are not chemically compatible. Only use water, not more then 7-10%. With Regal Select, the extender is recommended and it makes the paint flow better then thinning it with water.
Good luck.

I should have been clearer about the Adavance in my response. As JC pointed out do not use the BM Extender in Advance. In parts 3&4 of the videos I go into this, I'll make them public later.

The last video I posted that is Advance in thinned, normally how I shoot it.

My dealer stocks Butyl Cellosolve. It's item number R6 K 25 530-9125.

That said, don't waste your time or money on it. General Finish Enduro Extender is a better product to thin with and it eliminates micro foaming.

For clean up water and  gun cleaning brushes. Cheep spray carburetor cleaner works well also.

That is a hot plate.

[member=24938]JCLP[/member] - Are you happy with the results using BM Advance.  Are you using a Fuji Gun? If so, what cap and needle combination has worked best for you?  Thanks

I love Advance. The only thing it that it takes a long time to dry. I ususally wait 16-24 hours before I sand and re-coat. The paint levels great and produces a better finish then Regal Select. If I am not rushed to finish a project, I will use advance.
As for sprayer, I use an Earlex 6003 with the Pro gun, 1.3mm needle and cap and I thin 10% with water. The paint needs to go on thick. I believe 3.5 wet mils. Make sure you read the TDS for advance available on their web site.
Cheers,
JC

Water works?  That's odd as I've seen water based material that claimed water clean up and even soapy water wouldn't touch it.

The TDS for KA+ Clear;
http://www.woodweb.com/images_forums_public/finishing/KemAquaPlus.pdf

They give you the choice of DPM or BS to thin the product. I use the Enduro Extender which is DPM, I'd get it from my SW dealer, but for some reason they don't stock it.

Under cleaning, they do not recommend a cleaning agent. They tell you to flush with water after cleaning, then use a 2 to 1 ratio of water to BS to prevent rusting.

TDS KA+ White;
webP
DF.jsp?SITEID=SWOEM&lang=E&doctype=PDS&prodno=M64W521

They do not call DPM or BS a thinner, they call it a retarder. The White s very susceptible to micro foaming. Blending either in the product is initially a challenge. The thinner they recommend his water.

Cleaning they do recommend water, then treat with the 2 to 1 water to BS to prevent rusting.

Once dried, water, soapy water will not affect any waterborne I know of. Until it is cured all of them I know if can be cleaned or thinned with water.

A good gun cleaning kit is a must for any gun owner.

The micro foaming of KA + White is what is holding me back from getting a 395, 595 or Merkur 28:1 AAA. Working on the district rep to try them all before I decide.
