I just purchased the TS75 and man its very sweet.

I have a panther blade in my 55 and its a great ripping blade, but I'm just wondering what the real difference between the Panther and the 18 tooth blades are for the 75 , and what people prefer, as I'd just like to get one.

Thanks a lot.

Hi

I have a TS75, i can speak of the comparison on the standard or panther blades.
However I do use the Universal blade almost primarily 90% of the time I'm just jointing a rough edge off an board for making custom trim work usually cutting no more than 5/4 stock. I have had great experience with the results giving me burn free jointed edge ready for glue. When ripping maple I use setting 2-3 and on walnut or cherry I use 4. Perfect results every time with a sharp blade.

Cheers
Aaron

The Panther has a slightly sharper hook angle @ 28 degrees compared to the 20 degree hook angle on the 18-tooth. The kerfs are identical. Both are ATB tooth blades.

Condensed from Rockler's website:

On most saw blades, the faces of the teeth are tipped forward or backward, rather than being perfectly in line with the center of the blade. This is called "hook angle."

A blade with high positive hook angle will yield a very aggressive cut and a fast feed rate. A lower hook angle will slow the feed rate and will also inhibit the blade's tendency to "climb" the material being cut. A blade for ripping lumber will generally have a high hook angle, where an aggressive, fast cut is usually what you want.

So, the Panther blade has fewer teeth and sharper hook angle, meaning a faster - but potentially rougher - cut. The 18-tooth blade has a softer hook angle, meaning a SLIGHTLY slower - but potentially smoother - cut.

If you're cutting 3/4 to 5/4 inch stock and want a clean edge, I'd go with the 18 tooth. If you're ripping 8/4 or above, definitely get the Panther.

Hope that helps?

I fell into this myself. Used to use a Panther blade in my 55 all the time, turns out the blade that came with your 75 is more like that, and the panther blade you can buy (which I also own after doing what you did, but blindly) is excellent for ripping along the grain of real woods.

I may have some of the names of the blades wrong, but I was in your position and kinda felt the names of the blades from one saw to the larger one should be renamed as they appear to perform different tasks.

Basically the Universal on the 75 seems more like the panther on the 55, to my mind and when I queried the cutting quality on this forum I was looked at funny...which is unusual as I wasn't wearing my tutu.

I'm pretty sure that's the reason right there?

Please put your tutu back on before posting again - you'll get FAR fewer funny looks.
