I don't know if this is correct but try this:

"The Dutch were not the original settlers, but they were the first Europeans to step ashore here. I think it was William Dampier who named it New Holland when he landed at Roebuck Bay, Western Australia in 1688. Prior to him, Willem Jansz, captain of the "Duyfken" made the first known European landing on Australian soil near modern day Weipa on the Gulf of Carpentaria. Dirk Hartog and Abel Tasman were other Dutch explorers active in Australian waters."

If you go to google and type in "original name of Australia" (like I did) you will get many answers.  It seems that question is part of a trivia game of some sort.  I just cut and pasted because of my ignorance in this matter.  Eli's statement also comes up as a name of an explorer and possible name.

Australia was visited by William Dampier several years before James Cook. He landed on the west coast. The Aborignal people there used bark from trees to make canoes and stripped the bark by cutting footholds around a tree to get to the right height. At first glance, Dampier only saw half of the cuts and assumed that giants lived there. He named the land, of which no-one had any idea of the true size, New Holland. The thinking of the time was that the  Southern hemisphere would reflect the Northern Hemisphere and that therefore their would be a "Great Southern Land" (Google Great Southern Land lyrics and you'll get a great song by Iva Davies and Icehouse).

Cook was the first to chart the East coast and called it New South Wales.

Abel Tasman discovered (I much prefer found again, as the Aboriginal people knew all about it and mainland Australia yeeeaaars before.) what is now Tasmania. He called it Van Diemon's Land after the then Governor of the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia).

If you look at the shape of Tasmania, it may remind you of a particular part of the female anatomy. Hence the statement, look at her map of Tassie!! ;D

Little known fact(apparently) AUstralia is the same approximate size as the USA and we have cattle stations (ranches) the size of Texas.

A family story: My grandmother (I never really knew her, seeing her maybe two or three times in my lifetime.  My grandson is a little more fortunate.  i have a pic from a few years ago with him, his mother, both grandmothers and two great grandmothers > his mother's GM and his father's GM< all together.  He got to know both great grandmothers as well as still bonding more and more with his grandmother and Oma) used to brag about one of her ancestors having been one of the very first settlers in "the New World".  My faher and uncle decided to investigate and went to a geneologist.  With conciderable research, it was finally determined that indeed her story was true.  It seems the ancestor of question had been a horse thief and had been given the choice of hanging or being shipped off "to the new world".  End of bragging rights
