I was horrified by their choice of footwear.  [scared]

Pretty traditional Japanese footwear. It's worked for a thousand years...or more?

Looked like trainers (sneakers) to me.

My comment was tongue-in-cheek.

Another one here which may be of interest…

It has less emphasis on the large-scale architectural joinery, but it gives, amongst other things, a little background to traditional Japanese carpentry as a profession - and using that philosophy in a more Western context.

It’s an hour-and-a-half long and leisurely-paced… filmed at an informal talk/seminar/demonstration given by Jim Blauvelt (who I hadn’t heard of before) but there are lots of interesting points along the way; for example, the impressively huge 3 thou shaving taken by his Japanese post plane (about 15 mins in). And it seems he re-prepares the surface of his bench (not the one he's obliged to use in the film…) every week to ensure it’s flat.

The line from the movie "The Right Stuff" comes to mind.  "No bucks....  No Buck Rogers."

These guys have talent but that's not rare and it's not the essential ingredient  The essential ingredient, the really rare thing, is funding.
