Was curious to know if anyone has tried retrofitting the HL 850 with a plug-it? Anyone know why they had to put a standard cord on the planner? I'm guessing it was due to UL regulations.
My Rotex came with a standard cord. I was able to buy an off-the-shelf plug-it cable replacement from Festool (about a foot long, with two bared wires at the tool end), and disregarding all the warnings about self-fitting replaced the standard cable with the plug-it in roughly two minutes. There's two wires, two screws - that's it.
The HL850 predated the introduction of the Plug-It system and Festool decided to not re-engineer older tools. While that seems like a bummer we need to realize that it could be quite expensive to do it right. Most handles or housings that recieve the cord would have needed new injection molds designed and machined. If upgraded models are already on the draing board it would be hard to justify. Retrofitting is an option if you can get the adapters but it will not be as clean as a designed in system. Not bad, but not perfect.
