POLL: Logging into a website with your Facebook, Google or Twitter account

It will happen, sooner or later; I cannot be the only one to have noticed
the increasing 'pressure' to link FOG with Facebook.

For all I know, Festool are nuturing links with the NSA as well.

Richard, there's no pressure at all to link the FOG with Facebook. Like tens of thousands of other companies, Facebook is a way that we can connect with our customers, especially those who are not on the FOG, to have a two way form of communication. It's real-time and we share a lot more on Facebook than we could through our email newsletter.

I doubt the NSA even knows who Festool is.

I certainly didn't mean to create paranoia, I was just curious whether it was worthwhile to offer alternative "OpenID" methods of logging into the Festool USA website for the purposes of managing tool registrations and other things.

I am a huge fan of SSO(single sign on). I would and do use my google id to authenticate when I can.

Google knows enough about my life, they don't need to know what other websites I am a member of. I value privacy more than convenience.

Offering options is fine with me, but the day my FOG account must be synched with some social media site is the day I will say adios.

To be honest, I would trust the authentication to google and facebook more than I would FOG... and nothing against your Shane, but Google and Facebook have to resources to dedicate a huge team and millions of dollars to just policing authentication security. I would worry more about someone hacking FOG than gaining access to my google password.

You just have to trust that a 3rd party authenticator would do no evil. errr hmmhh NSA..

but , if one uses FOG login credentials that are just for FOG then no one could hack your Google/FB/Twitter , the google log-in could be hacked at any number of sites that use google log-in to obtain you google info & there by THEN compromising every site that you use google for , the risk of a hacker getting CC#'s , Bank accounts #'s thru the Google pay cart that these pay for use sites use for payment .
for instance say your looking for a tool , you google it , then use the google link to go there , you log in thru you google sign-in  & buy it  . Any hacker worth his weight could back track that purchase back to your google account  & get your passwords , then move on to your CC# & bank account .
anything that is overly  convenient  has huge risks IMO .

Ok, thanks for the feedback everyone. I think I have enough responses to see the general consensus. I'm going to lock the thread before this turns into a debate on privacy, NSA, etc.  [eek]

I won't bother messing with third-party authentication on our website.
