Polyester resin & acetone for waterproofing

Hey gang,
I have been doing some research after a failed attempt at waterproofing a bathtub surround using Teak.
I came to the conclusion that simple teak oil will not suffice as a top coat and that I need to permanently encapsulate the surround to repel all moisture. However I'm really not that familiar with 2 part resin top coats and I also am very adverse to the idea of a glossy finish....I love the look and feel of the oiled teak.
After doing a little snooping around I came across a couple articles/how-to's about using a mix of a polyester finishing resin, combined with a catalyst and simple acetone. I'm wondering if anyone here has any experience with this and could lend a few tips or tell me to stay away etc.
best,
HT
