i went back to my woodcraft store yesterday to look at the kapex again.
i just wanted to feel the weight and to look more on the settings of the saw.i'm still not sure yet if i'm going to get this saw,it's a little hard to swallow that price!
i did notice that the saw have positive stops at 0-15-22.5-30-and 45(miter). on the bevel, just 0-45,but no stops on 31.6(miter)and no stops on the bevel setting for cutting standard 52^ crown molding.
i know that the saw has a setting to get maximum cutting capacity, and i believe you can cut 6 5/8" crown(upside down, against the fence)witch i like to cut that way better.but i've come across some crown that was too big for my saw(bosch 3915 10"slide)so i had to cut it laying flat.
but i think with the capacity of the kapex,i will be able to cut most large size crown.

i'm just curious about others that cuts large crown,do you cut laying flat a lot?
do you have/use positive stops on you saw to cut crown(bevel/miter)?
do you think the kapex should handle all of you cutting?
is it a problem for you that the kapex does not have positive stops for crown molding?

Master, the Kapex has a marking for 31.6 degrees, but no detent. I don't work with crown bigger than 6 5/8" very often. Cutting on the flat is a bit of a hassle for me because I don't do it very often. I've never used a saw with detents on the bevel other than 0 and 45 degrees. The cutting capacity of the Kapex is almost the same as my Makita 1214 (12" blade). The Kapex's other features more than make up for any capacity issues I might have.

We have the fine tooth blade in here now, and I was going to do some cuts with the Kapex tomorrow.  Whilst I am at it, Cabman, what size is large size crown?  Perhaps we will do some capability testing  for you in the shop tomorrow.

RW, if you happen to read this this evening, stop by and snag some crown that the Cabman requests please.

brice are you sure?   i did not see it!    30 degrees, but not 31.6.  i will go back and check again.
if there was a detent at 31.6,don't you think there would also have a positive stop or a mark on the bevel setting?

brice,i just call woodcraft, and they told me that there is a mark on the scale but no positive stop.

timmy, for the most part,i can cut standard crown on my saw.but i had a job about a few months ago that i had to use a 12"saw.i think the crown was 5 1/4" or maybe 5 1/2".i try to cut it flat on my saw but i could not find the span of the crown.(i think it was 45 degrees but it did not fit together right)
i don't use this size a whole lot,but when i do i like to be ready for it,especially if i spend $1300.00 on a saw.
also, check for those detentes, brice think that there is one for 31.6 but i check it yesterday and i did not see any for that setting.not a big deal,if the saw can cut large size crown.

Master, you are right, it is 30 degrees, sorry for the confusion. I'll edit me post above.

Timmy, I suspect the cut you showed with all the tear out and the fine saw marks were caused by a blade that wasn't as sharp as once was, I'd also speculate that the cut was made with a chop and not fully extending the saw out and pushing the blade into the stock. I've been able to make some very smooth cut with little tear out with the standard blade.

I am anxious to try the "right out of the box" blade tomorrow Brice.  It will be a neat exercise for sure.  RW and I will get on it around 10 central.  We'll post ASAP.

I have purchased and used positive stops (even the sawhelper ones) but there's always some issue with them.  Mainly most of them are pretty far from the blade so they won't work at all when cutting short pieces (which I do a lot of).  I have had the best luck with covering my saw table with blue 3m tape, then I make sure the crown is in the right position and mark a pencil line on the tape.  I do this at all degree's I plan to cut which is usually 45.5 - 46 and not 45.  Then when I cut my crown upside down I just line up with my pencil line.  Very fast and accurate.  I wish I had better luck with stops, but haven't.

Chris...

Quick Pic of some 6 1/4" crown under the Kapex.  Not much room left there.  Perhaps 3/8"  This would make the Festool claim of 6 5/8" nested crown true.  That would be maxing out the top of the fence as
