My daughter wanted a bookcase from Ikea, I told her I could come up with something better. Now she wants another....

I work alot with Purpleheart too. What finish did you use on the bookcase?  By the way, it's WAY nicer than an IKEA version, but you already knew that... [wink]

First, lucky Daughter!

Nice contrast of wood choices.  And excellent execution!

What is the finish?  Also curious how much Purpleheart will darken over time.

Love the bookcase.  I love Purpleheart, though. :)

Some Purpleheart gets really dark toward grey in time.  But I found out a couple years ago that there are obviously different types of Purpleheart.  My dealer back then had loads of it and I bought some for my assembly table.  Years later, it is still purple, though more of a dark deep purple (smoooke on the waaaa-ter... oh, sorry).  I've seen others turn grey quickly.  He had a stack against the main building for months that got daily Arizona sun. When you riffled through them, you could see the sunlines, but the difference wasn't that great.  Wish I could still get some of his Purpleheart.  Great supplier, horrible businessman... out of business.

Very nice work! Did you also give it one of those weird IKEA names that only us europeans can pronounce?  [wink]

Really nice. I like the contrast of the Purple Heart with the inside of the case.
I like the crown, reminds me of a hat. It gives the piece a lot of character.
How did you make it?

Sorry to be so late with replies did not know so many had commented or asked questions.

Finish is Target coatings 9300 flat clear. Many coats the ply absorbed a bunch. Poplar ply. The Target 9300 has a good deal of UV protection and with it being a film coating I hope it sealed out the air so Oxidation will be slowed. So far no change.

The top is not crown trim it is a cove cut into the lip of the top with a Freud horizontal cove bit. I used my 1400 router for this.

I am starting on a bigger one now in Walnut and Baltic Birch.

Paul, thank for the post you have no idea how much time I have spent watching your internet video's. I enjoy your work very much.

That contrast is really nice. I have always thought that purple heart was cool because it really is purple.

The cove top trim .... very nice  [cool]

Do you mean a raised panel bit? That's very creative.

Tim,

The bit I used was a Freud 99-318. It is called a Vertical Raised Panel Bit. I used in in the horizontal table as the blank was way to heavy to stand on end.

Thanks Mark. In my recent copy of Cabinetmaker they did an interview with John Rook. Here is a desk he made with Purple heart and sycamore.
