Quality headless pinners - thoughts please

Hi All,

A while back I got rid of my cheap "no name" Chinese pinner and haven't got round to replacing it. It was one of those sloppy pneumatic, in a generic grey plastic case things that I was told was "really good" when I purchased it long ago - in my ignorant past.

I've noticed a lot of FOGgers leaning towards 23g Cadex and Grex ... but is there anything good out there that's cordless? I've only really seen the Makita and that thing just looks "wrong" before I even consider it [blink] [huh]

I'm not pin crazy (have you seen some of those guys on Youtube?), but there's more than the odd occasion when they're extremely useful and it's actually annoying me right now that I don't have one.

So the key questions are ...

1. Is there a decent cordless pinner alternative on the market that works well and isn't the weight of a brick?

2. Failing cordless, what other brands of pneumatic pinners would you favour outside of Cadex and Grex? (neither are sold locally and I'd ideally like something I could pick up here).

3. Lastly, failing a potentially decent local option ... what's the best and most relatable available ... is it the Cadex?

Fot context, I'd like the gun to support a good range on pin lengths.

Looking forward to your advice.

Thanks,

Kev

[member=47801]john molloy[/member] .. sorry, I should of added "headless" to the subject.

Kev,  take a look and see if you can get Omer down there. I ultimately went with the Grex 650xl, but I seriously looked at Omer for a while.

Cheers. Bryan.

I have both a Grex 23 ga and a Cadex 21 ga. You can get both headless and headed pins for the 21 ga. It has become my go-to gun.  The hole left by he headless 21 ga pins is nearly as unobtrusive as that of the 23 ga.

Just figured I'd throw another option at you. Wish I'd of known when I bought my 23 ga, needless to say, my earlier acquisition.

Is senco an option down there?  I have a 21 ga headed pinned to supplement the Grex pinned.  Both work well.  Not sure cordless options are plentiful enough yet.  Manufacturers seem to view that pinned as more of a specialty item and they are still trying to go after the mainstream market.

[member=21249]RKA[/member] Senco are here, but they don't bring in the pinners [blink]

Apart from the crappy Bostitch, there's very little on the local market. It seems pinners just haven't caught on here. I hadn't realised, but now that I'm looking at doing some stuff that would really benefit from pins [sad]

[member=2575]thudchkr[/member] something I want to use in a piece of work are the stainless pins and I haven't seen anyone doing those in 21g, just 23g.

Something tells me I'll probably end up with Cadex V2/21.55 & V2/23.55 and just use the 23 for stainless pins.

Somebody down under should import these puppies [scratch chin]

I'm looking too, the Grex 650l Is £145 here. Seems a good gun

I use the Grex 635.  I seldom have a need for pins over 35mm, so it's ideal for me.  The one caution is the the skinny 23 ga. pins will wander wherever they want to go, so keep your digits well away from any potential path they might choose to take.  I shouldn't need to mention how I know this...  [sad]

[member=7493]Sparktrician[/member] being the excessive guy that I am, I can see me dedicating a ~30mm 23G to small pins. The 50/55 magazines make the little pinners not quite so little!

I've seen how much 23g pins shift off course when a piece is hit perfectly perpendicular, so what you say doesn't surprise me.

Joiner, where is the Grex available from?

I bought one from rutlands over a year ago, it was the only place I could find one in the uk.

See if you can get the XL over there. It doesn't have the double trigger. It is nose style so it feels safe and doesn't cause nearly as many lockout issues.

Cheers. Bryan.

I am using the Grex 650L.  It works well but the pins sometimes go wildly off course.  Rick has a detailed explanation of this and other aspects of pneumatic nailing on his website.

I have the Bostitch headless Pinner and I find it really good. I can't fault it at all ;-)

Kev,

Sorry that I'm super late to the party.

Omer, BEA and Fasco are sold in Australia.
Omer definitely makes 21 and 23 gauge in Italy.
Fasco, mostly Italian made, sources a 23 gauge from VIM international (same as Grex and previous Cadex model).
BEA (made in germany) is mostly known for their factory friendly staplers, but they do make nailers, I just don't know what sizes off the top of my head.

Omer, BEA and Fasco are what the factories use.

Oh my, so I was investigating this further....

Internetwise: I can only find Omer products that use the "Raptor" plastic fasteners.
Only staplers for BEA, and plenty of Fasco, but not their pinners.

I hope you get better mileage than I did.
