R0 90 DX heating up

Hi there. I have a question for the users. I just purchased a R0 90, my first Festool sander. I don't have a Fetool vac so I'm using it without dust extraction. I'm finding that the sander is running much hotter than I expected. Definitely very warm along the handle and hotter towards the rear where the motor is mounted. Is this normal or does the sander need to be attached to a dust extactor so that the air flow keeps the unit cool. Like the sander but I'm concerned about the heat build-up.
Thanks for any information.
Dave

Yes the Rotex90   does run the hotest of all the Rotex range and even hotter without dust extraction.

So yes using dust extraction does keep it slightly cooler but it does still run hot

You should use it with dust extraction anyway not just to keep it slightly cooler.

You get better sanding results and sands alot nicer! (ALOT)
Your sanding disks last alot longer!
No dust!

I gotta say it but I think the Rotex range is CRAP with out dust extraction I have used it many of times with no dust extraction and their are better sanders out on the market for less which will do a better job than the rotex range with no dust extraction.   BUT if you have dust extraction the Rotex range are brilliant best sanders ever!

So basically if you dont want to use dust extraction dont buy a Rotex save your money! OR splash out and get the best sanders in the world but you will have to buy/use dust extraction

Dave, I agree with JMB, this is normal.  I use my RO90 without dc a fair amount and it certainly runs hot.  I there are people that say it can get too hot to hold.  I don't know if they're just wimps or I have tougher hands or maybe my sander just doesn't get as hot as others but I think it's not too bad.

This is another good example of inadequate Festool literature and the awesomeness of the FOG. Kind of like the lack of letting people know the ets will run like crap until it is broken in. Not complaining just mentioning.
This has come up numerous times. Yes, the 90 does run really hot. I wouldn't worry about it nature of the beast. The 90 wants you to beat on it.
I've used the 90 with and without a vac. Temperature difference is noticeable but not by much.

Thanks for the information, guys. I'm less concerned now. I was more worried about a potential fire hazard before my 30 day free trial was up. I bought it because I've been making a lot of rails and stile cabinet door with 1/4" insert panels for my garage. They're made of poplar and baltic birch so the wood is not always perfect and running then through the drum sander tends to remove too much material. The 3" sanding disc was the perfect size to flatten and smooth the frames. I'll probably keep the rotex as I was intending to invest in a domino and 48 vac after Xmas when I've paid for all the other family members' Xmas presents  ;D. I already have a 55 plunge saw and the 1400 router. But the Rotex just may prove that green isn't the perfect colour after all.

Hi Dave,

You have already got your answer but.......

Welcome to the FOG !  [smile]

Seth

Thanks Seth for the welcome. I've been lurking here for some time but up until now I haven't had an issue with my Festools that I needed explained.

I have seen several threads about the RO90 running hot. Made me hesitant before I purchased one. I have used mine a few times and it doesn't seem to run any hotted than my RO150 or 150/3 even after couple hours of use. I'll have to take some comparative measurements next time I use it.

Nice little sander but at times it would be nice if I had three hands (one to hold the stock, and two for the sander).

Life is nicer with a vac. [smile]

Once you go vac you'll nver go back [wink]
