Rail translucent rubber?

I'm very new to Festool - in fact I haven't even used my TS55 yet. It was a gift...

On the rail/guide though there is a piece of softish translucent rubber that is in the way of the blade and I'm not sure what I should do with this? Do we remove it?

First,
[welcome] to the FOG!

Don't remove that rubber / plastic.  That is part of the system.  The first time you make a cut you will cut that and establish both a splinter guard on the left hand side of the cut as well as a reference edge to use when you measure and line up your cuts.  The first time you cut, it is best to have sacrificial material underneath such as styrofoam.

It sounds like you have a very generous friend, but do yourself a favor and read this manual on the TS 55 saw -

It's clear, concise  a quick read and will answer many of your (not even thought of yet) questions.
There is way more nuance to the saw than the typical circular saw, way more benefits.
