Raised Panels

I hate to keep harping on Raised Panels but I am so confused. I am new to making raised panel doors and am only doing them for my own use, not a business. The YouTube video by Festool shows doing the door panels in a vertical position but I thought you ran the panel flat on the table reverse side up just like a normal routing operation. The video shows a support fence attached to the CMS and running the panel upright. I am going to take a class on making doors at the end of the month but the class is using a Kreg table so I am not sure what I am going to learn as far as how to run the panel or what router bits to use.

Help again would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Question is - How will you be making your panels? With the CMS or a router table? I have made my panels in a traditional router table with the panel flat (horizontal) good face down. I don't know much about the CMS system so I cannot offer any guidance there.

In the Festool video they are using a vertical panel raising bit. Most raised panel bits are designed to run horizontal or the good face down. The CMS cannot take the large diameter bits so that is why they use the verticle bit. Many people here on FOG have used the panel bits in their CMS.

Both vertical and horizontal work.  Either system has its pros and cons.  One advantage or the vertical method is that if you have a smaller horsepower router your can run the vertical bits successfully if you can't use the larger horizontal bits.

I think the confusion the type of panel raising bit being used. In the video Festool is using a 1400 router. From I have gathered the 1400 cannot swing a huge panel raising bit so a vertical bit is being used.

Since Festool in the states doesnt support using a OF2200 in the CMS which can use a horizontal panel raising bit in the CMS. Festool only supports the use of the 1400.

Some of us dont use the OF2200 and dont use huge horizontal panel raising bits in their CMS . In some case the bits are so huge a aux fence is need to help with the bit clearing the fence opening. but since we dont use the 2200 in the CMS we cant tell you anything about that.

Jobsworth is spot on.

But it's such a hassle to set the router table up with an OF1400 with horizontal router bits and an auxiliary fence, I just pick up a hand plane now. Apart from being just as fast, you can choose the exact bevel you are looking for rather than being restricted to the bevel on the router bit.

Wow, this is great information. I think I understand it now. So my setup is using the 1400 in the CMS, because the 2200 is not supported. I just purchased the 1400 because it was the largest Festool router for the CMS.

Since I am a beginner at making cabinets, I am taking a class in two weeks at Woodcraft on cabinet making, including raised panel doors. They are using a Kreg router table and routing the doors horizontally. As I understand it, after the class, I can get a 10% discount on router bit sets. I am going to purchase a vertical raised panel bit along with a set of bits for the stiles and rails, because most likely I will do my doors vertically. I may however, look at smaller horizontal panel bits as well.

Thanks for clarifying this situation. I am glad I just didn't go purchase a set of Freud bits without an understanding of how to use them.

Don't forget a bit to do the back cut on your panel! [big grin]  There's several bits needed to do this type of work.  The panel raising bit, back but bit, {MATCHED} coping and stick bits, and you may want a dado bit to do the groove to accept the panels.  OR you can buy a big panel raising bit and make alot less bit changes.  Pluses and minuses to each.  Hopefully this can at least help you ask questions to make your own decision.

Dont forget festool has a 30 day no hassel return policy. So if you bought the 1400 in the 30 day window you can return it and get the 2200. So you wont be able to use it in the CMS like the rest of us. The 2200 centering ring and other items needed for mounting the 2200 in the CMS comes with the CMS when you bought it.
