[attachimg=2]Good Evening,

I have always feel like I receive more than I can offer; this site has helped me greatly. Much of my work is pretty run-of-the-mill with my focus on built-ins and stair case work. However we just finished this project which was a step out of the "comfort zone" and I thought it might be of interest.....let me know your thoughts!  And thanks again for all the help!

(Hoping I can upload these pics....always a challenge for me  [smile])

Absolutely Gorgeous work!  You should be proud.  What a fitting case to house such a beautiful collection.  Please, more photos and more details on how you built the cabinet!

It looks like you lit each shelf and what are the shelves made out of?  What type of lighting did you use?

Thank you for showing us.

More pics....hope they work...

Cabinet lighting= thirty-six, 3" LED light fixtures (Lee Valley), controlled by two dimmable transformers

shelves are actually torsion boxes, laminated with white plastic....front edges mahogany nosing....wiring through the back and down into the lower carcase....

Very nice!

Thanks Scott!

I was actually thinking of you when we were doing the finish work.....something like "I wish that painting expert were here right now because I don't know what I am doing...."

How did you finish it?

Customer wanted black (obviously) and we wanted to keep the rich grain look....we chose mahogany as the base material (solid and veneer)....thinking that we needed to finish in a traditional manner (dye or stain, hand rubbed clear finish) we worked up a number of samples but in the end we simply applied three quick coats of black enamel (all within 90 minutes), steel wool and wax....

be very interested in hearing your thoughts about this....still not overly confident that we made the right decisions, although it does look quite nice (which surprised the heck out of me)....

I am assuming you sprayed? What enamel did you use?

Hi Scott,

We did spray this cabinet but certainly not in the conventional sense....Rustoleum Satin black....aerosol cans (ok, stop laughing)....since the cabinet was very modular we could easily spray all the parts individually having no real spraying capability.... My take ways from this experience is to not over complicate things....that said I would use my graco fine finish sprayer and an enamel paint from Sherman W....

Ok, now let me have it! :)

That project looks great!

And as far as using a rattle-can finish, I am reminded of the old saying "If it's stupid but it works, it's not stupid". Thanks for sharing!

I'd echo wow's comments.  What matters is the final results and I think it looks great.  Nice work on the design and execution.

One summer during my younger college days I studied at the University of Krakow where I had an opportunity to visit some archeological digs and building restorations taking place on one of the oldest streets in the Medieval town.  One female worker on a scaffolding caught my attention since, at the time, there were no females working in construction in the states.  As I watched her apply gold paint to some carved lettering on the facade of a very early building, she casually reached for a spray can of gold paint, shook it, sprayed some in the cap, and reloaded her brush!  Whatever works!

Mike:
Looks good.
I am sure the extra step of rubbing with steel wool and waxing helps improve the overall finish.
There's a lot of lights in there, thanks for explaining what you did.
