Just saw this on the UK Workshop forum - I don't know how the mechanism works, but it's genius!!!

It's a "Jupe Table", Robert Jupe patented the first of that style in 1835. Our very own Rick Christopherson has documented building one . I believe the one in that video is from DB Fletcher Furniture Design's line of Jupe Tables.

If you're interested in how the mechanisms work, here's a weblog comment with a whole bunch of links to patents, including an 1888 patent with a leaf mechanism similar to DB Fletcher's and a 2003 patent that seems to differ only in the materials specified for the mechanism.

Yes, I remember seeing Rick's pages before on his table, but it seems that this one is a further development o the concept. On Rick's table, and the one in the 2003 patent, the mechanism pushes the main segments apart, and then the leaves have to be inserted afterwards, by hand.

On the one in the video, the leaves are integral, and automatically lift into position.

i have seen the patents and while they are interesting i would love to see how that table was made. the referencing web page was interesting but i do not think that it is in the same league as the video. the video is crack for wood workers. or a grail.
