Really, some people ......

No idea what you can find sometimes, I've been working on a renovation project the last 5 weeks, painting an entire house on my own, together with professionals from some other trades doing their own stuff.

We're now getting into the final stages and the house should be finished next week, but there was so much going on last week I had to take a couple of days off because the carpenter, masonry and tiler guys didn't want to mess with wet paint, understandably.

And then the tiler ran into some trouble with some rough spots on the bathroom floor and thought it might be wise to grab some guy's ETS 125 (mine) to save himself some trouble. Unfortunately it had some 320 grit paper on it, not the best choice when you want to remove some gunked up grout. So, being the professional the guy is, he looks for some sandpaper that might help him better, and sure he's lucky to find himself some 80 grit paper.

Too bad it was for the DTS 400.  [unsure]

Well, too bad for ME, not for him, with the sander's owner far away, he decided to use it anyway. Although a box of 60 grit 125 mm paper was right next to it. But that would have been no sport, obviously. [blink]

With hilarious results of course. Not content with just destroying the uncovered hook & loop parts, he decided the foam would have to go also. Well, at least he got his job done.

But when I informed the main contractor, I got some money on the spot to buy me a new pad, with the promise he would deduct it from the tiler's pay, and that there was a good chance he would not use this guy anymore for any future projects.

Really, some people ......  [scratch chin]

OUCH ! That tradesman should get some kind of stupidity recognition award for the ability to destroy a sander in minutes.  Just think of what he could do with a Kapex !

Glad you received compensation though.

It always amazes me when pros do not have the tools to do the job they are supposed to be doing.  [blink]

When I saw the pictures I just let out a string of expletives that would make a biker blush.  Holy cow, that is AWFUL.  You're a better person than me, I would have invited the tiler back over for a bonus check only to gruesomely murder him.  And these are "professionals..."  I'm just a dumb DIYer and I have more respect for tools than that.  Cripes.

Also, in today's world, there is really no excuse for misusing a tool this badly.  Pull out your phone, go to Youtube and watch a video on that tool, there's guaranteed to be one.

I've always wanted to find a way to link my phone to my tools via Bluetooth so the tools won't operate if I'm not there. Never know who's doing what if you pop offsite for lunch or to grab something.

I once rounded the corner to see a guy about to cut a cement covered 2x6 with my tablesaw. I had a brand new, big $$ melamine blade in the saw. Needless to say I was less than impressed.

I've had an Porter Cable 126 door planer since the early seventies.  Probably 25 years ago I decided to buy a new carbide cutter.  These blades are a curved skew design and cost $100.00 + back then.  I lent it to a friend warning him to avoid nails, should have saved my breath as he returned it with a nick in the brand new blade.  Still irritates me.

Unfortunately, I had to go to a lockable gang box when my tools are on site with other trades. I learned the hard way, similar to your experience. I feel your pain.  I am happy that the GC did the right thing for you.  That is not my experience.

Do you still loan him tools?

I dont loan my tools out.

Ill come a do what ever they need to the tool for but I wont loan it out.

Jobsworth,  I'm much more particular about who borrows my tools these days.  He was a really nice guy and he and his wife were my daughters god parents.  He offered to pay for it but he was struggling to get by at that point and I didn't have the heart to tell him that he had damaged a $100.00 (in the early 80s) blade.

I “hear” you guys.
I guess that you’d call me “anal” about the way I’m meticulous about my tools.
After learning the hard way - I’d rather go and just “do it for ‘em” -
Than be angry about the way a friend/relative returns a tool.
Caveat: I do have one buddy who I trust to loan tools to.
He returns ‘em in better shape/cleaner (like new) than when he got ‘em. [big grin]

It is really a shame. How people thinks that they can take other's tools and use them that bad!

I'm only a DIYer, but I can appreciate and enjoy using proffesional tools and so my collection of Festool has grown a lot. But people even don't know the brands or the prices, and think that they can nail with the back of a driver, as a driver is nothing but a tool and they don't have a hammer on hand [crying] They even don't now that a Festool costs a little fortune.

I finally made the decission to have some not proffesional tools to be the ones to lend to whoever ask me for one. My good quality tools stay at home.

Regards.

I simply ask for collateral (festool list price) upfront and gratulate to the purchase of a new (used) green tool in case they loose/mistreat/destroy it. Has also the benefit of the stuff coming back on time, or at least a call with the question if it would be OK to borrow it some days longer (and still be sure that it'll show up then).

Dosn't mean that I'm mean when a bit breaks or whatnot, it's just a good strategy to keep the sociopaths uninterested.

Imagine how useful a Plug It lockout would be in these situations?

Tiler would just go over to electrician's unused tools, find a spool of wire, a roll of tape, and presto, sander running directly from receptacle.
