Redwood burl and kingwood hall table

I have this odd triangular-shaped alcove in my entrance hall so I made this table to fit the space. The top is veneered with redwood burl and the three curved sides are veneered with kingwood. Edge banding, cockbeading and legs are all made from solid walnut. The finish is blond shellac, with the top French polished.

This was a difficult piece to make, lots of curved templates, veneered work, funny angles etc. All the joinery was done with the domino, including the table buttons. Joining the legs to to the aprons was a challenge because it is difficult to register the domino fence on a curved edge but with a couple of jigs the domino proved ideal for the task.

I cut the edge of the table top with a Trion jigsaw which left a perfectly perpendicular cut with very little tearout even on such a brittle veneer. It did a fantastic job!

All the sanding was done with the ETS 125.

Legs, mouldings, edge work all done with hand tools.

Thanks for looking.

I really like this table.  Rather advanced techniques...kudos.

Furniture always looks best if built for a specific purpose and location.

You really should take some pictures with a plain backdrop......that floor is almost too distracting to get a sense for the craftsmanship of that table.

I like it - nice and "quirky" like the space it's made to fit.

Great job  [wink]

Thanks Kev, thanks Jalvis.

Regarding the floor, I think it was originally put down in the 80s. Nowadays I don't think it's much in style- people prefer simpler tones- but I like it. Definitely distracting!

I had to make the table large enough and with strong colourful veneers so that it would complement the floor but not be swallowed up by it. I think it's a pretty good match.

Beautiful table!  Beautiful home!

I love seeing  your work.

Really nice design and execution.  I like the combination of woods you chose!

I guess putting a drawer in that would have been a bit of overkill!

Thanks for sharing!

Richard,

Beautiful work, as aways!  You really have an eye for design and some of the details!  Did you taper the legs with hand-tools or your technique for tapering?  Good stuff.

To be honest, I sold my TS55 in mid-March and had to endure six weeks till the TS55R arrived but this was a good project to be without a saw because of all the curves. I used my OF1400 to do the rough tapering on the legs with a flush trim bit (I made a nice jig for this purpose which allows me to alter the angle of the taper- I think it is actually better than the TS55 leg jig) and then finessed them with my favourite bench plane, a Lie Nielsen 5 1/2.

Thanks for all the nice comments.
