Congratulations to BOTH of you!

It's not -just- walnut either - it's that special piece that you've been saving.  I like the jarrah trim, nice touch.  Lucky sister.

Looks beautiful. Gorgeous wood.

Couple questions -- Did you use splines in the miters on the main box? Also is the top/bottom solid wood? If so, any concern about wood movement?  Thanks!

[member=4789]BIP[/member] .. looks beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
For most of us, it is the happiness you get when you create that makes woodworking addictive. And the joy one gets when you give it to someone has a multiplier effect on the happiness index. This piece becomes the medium and symbol to convey your love for generations to come. Nicely done.

I used biscuits on the mitered corners.  The bottom is floating in a rabbet so it has an 1/8" or so of movement.

The top is a mitred frame around a solid panel.  The boards have been air drying for over 20 years and since it is a very narrow panel (around 8") i don't expect it to move very much.

“The boards have been air drying for over 20 years”

I have an ebony plank that has been sitting around for 40 years waiting for me to come up with a worthy use. When I do I hope it turns out as nice as your box.
