Australia Day today - all over Oz its hot - some places nearing the 50c (120F). Nice sunny day here at 34c (93F).
Whats that got to do with revitalising systainers? SUN!
Retrobite is a process where you bring back the white from yellow plastics. Ive known about the process for years as its used in the restoration of consoles (nintendo, playstation etc) especially limited editions.
So end of last year I picked up 5 SYS3 old style systainers for AU $50 (a bargain Tloc SYS3 is $159 - with no discounts in Australia)
Poor condition but all in one piece. I put them straight to use for general "stuff". I created labels as you can still see on one box and my collection of systainers was growing. Fast forward approx 4 months and I didnt like what I saw so I thought what better time than now to do this process.
Basically you get a bottle of hydrogen peroxide of 40% vol. For the Aussies/Kiwis you can buy at most big chemists or hair salon shops. I got my daughter to pick some up for mehttps://www.hairhousewarehouse.com.au/Peroxide-40-Vol-1L Its always been hard to find but has become popular in the last 12 months
For Canadians/Americans, its a very common product made by Saloncarehttps://www.amazon.com/Salon-Care-Creme-Developer-Ounce/dp/B004OKDW20 and very cheap!
You must buy the 40% volume - lower volumes wont work.
I cleaned first with Magic Erasers and Steel Wool 000 (I use this on glass windows at home & in the car) to get old stickers & grime.
Next, you paint on the creme liberally and wrap it in cling wrap. Leave it in the sun for usually around 4 hours) but today only took 1 hour. Take off the wrap and hose off. Voila nice looking systainers.
You can see in the photo where I havent got all the yellow out so I will redo it. The "Safety Equipment" systainer was the best of the 5 and I wasnt going to clean it but after stacking it up - I'm going to do that one as well as redo 2.
Use gloves because its nasty stuff. I wasnt overly anal about getting it perfect - no crinkles in the wrap will give a better result. But 2 just needed to be done again. Overall Im stoked (real happy) with the result.
It will go yellow again but Im ok with that (3-5 years).
Theres alot of other solutions /formulas but for this type of project it is definitely the easiest.
I thought I'd post, not only to show my result, but to show others out there the process and give SOMETHING back to teh community (Total newbie LOL)
Cheers
