RO 90 Delta Mode Finish Quality vs. Fein Multimaster

I'm currently using a Fein Multitool with a delta sanding attachment to get into various nooks and crannies. It sands aggressively, but with its side to side sanding action, it is not very suitable for a final sanding before finishing. When I read the info about the RO 50 in delta sanding mode, it seems that it works in an aggressive gear driven mode rather than a random orbit mode. How nicely does the RO 90 in delta mode prep wood (in nooks and crannies) for finishing using a 180 or 22 grit paper. Also, does anyone have any experience with sanding using both the Fein and the RO 90 delta?

Thanks

WELCOME TO THE FOG!

I have used the Fein Multi Master for sanding and love it's aggressiveness in some situations.

If you have a chance to test drive the RO90 at a dealer - or buy one and try it under the 30 day return policy - I believe that you will find a world of difference.  I don't own the RO90 but have had the opportunity to put it thru its paces on several occasions.

I am sure others will add to this.

I have had 3 feins in 10 years and all have been worked to death as my main sander renovating architrave, skirting and windows. I have had the RO90 for three months. Much superior dust collection and finish. The fein hasn't been out of the box since. Different class. The fein will now do the jobs it was designed to do with a saw blade, removing putty, grout, etc.

I also have the Fein MM with all the sanding attachments/paper. Since getting the RO90, that's been quite a while, the Fein only gets used for cutting.
I can see where the Fein can be a useful sanding tool. Rough sanding, very tight areas, gouging to make a rustic edge, etc. For overall sanding though, the RO90 is a far better tool.

Before I bought my RO90, I used the MM for detailed sanding of painted surfaces.  Dust was a nuisance and I would keep the open end of a vac hose nearby to try to limit how much dust was spreading.  It seemed futile, but when I put the hose away, it was worse.  And frankly, it was a PITA holding the tool and the hose and it limited my control of the tool.  The abrasives would load up quickly as well.  The festool makes it so much easier and cleaner.  Unfortunately those areas I sanded were repainted, so I can't address that part of your question.  Like jools, I don't use the sanding attachments on the MM anymore.  It's nice that it can do it, but it's not my first choice.

I just redid a few slats on my plantation blinds.... the delta pad worked great.  Mainly i was removing some sloppy paint that my wife did  [bite tongue] but it worked great.  Took it down to the wood and did a nice run with 220 after.  silky smooth and no aggressive patterns.  I didn't take pics before we re-painted, but the trick was to let the tool and dust extraction do its thing.  we used a soft pad and 120 and 220 papers.

good luck man!

I have both the Fein and the RO90.

RO90 has much better finish quality.  I believe the difference is that the Fein only oscillates back and forth while the RO90 is orbital, resulting in a much better finish.

I may be mistaken but this is what I have observed when looking at the finish quality of the two tools closely.

I use the Fein for sawing only since I purchased the RO90.

Ditto on what NeilC said.  I have kept my DX93 for tight quarters sanding even after getting my RO90 since the bodies of the two sanders are different enough and the dust collection of the DX 93 is better for me than my RO90 in Delta pad usage.  I stopped using my Fein MM for sanding once I got both of the Festool sanders.  Try the RO90 for a week or two and compare it to your Fein MM, see what you think.
