RO150 FEQ pad stuck?

Just bought a used RO150 which works perfectly and will be ideal for what I need it for. Only problem is I cant remove the backing pad. Have depressed the lock button in Rotex mode and tried to twist the pad off but its not going to move. The pad might never have been removed and I wonder is getting stuck a common problem?

Its a top class tool which will mean that making soft tooling to produce aluminium motorcycle parts will be far far easier, but would be nice to be able to take the pad off without damaging anything.

Welcome to the FOG.

When new these are very stiff, but loosen up with each removal.  Consequently if this one has never been removed it will be stiff. This problem might be further exasperated by sanding crud. Try and get a real grip, perhaps getting another person to hold the sander on a bench and you use two hands.

[member=69160]ChrisUK[/member]  Welcome to FOG.  Try using leather gloves.  Might give you a better grip.  I did that with a stubborn ETS and it worked like a charm.

Not the cheapest solution but my 12v Milwaukee impact driver breaks almost anything loose with the fear of stripping or shearing.  I even use it to remove minuscule screws used on mortise lock cylinders.  Used it yesterday to break loose 6-32 screws holding Master padlock cylinders plugs so that I could rekey.

Had the same issue on my RO125. Made a dedicated wrench by fitting two dowels in a board with a distance equal to two opposite air duct holes in the pad. Makes it easy to dismount the pad

Not screwed on, rather a baynet  type  fitting that can be very tight when new. It's like a camera's interchangeable lens mount. However your idea might be sound if we were discussing an ETS 150.

Sit down or stand and hold sander between your legs. Depress green lock button and spin until it is held in position. Keeping turning pressure on sanding pad to hold lock on, move both hands to the sanding pad and twist with everything you got. 60 grit sandpaper on the pad might help dig into your skin to give you more traction.

Thanks, that sounds a very good way to remove the pad! I can easily make a wrench out of some 25 x 5mm steel strip I have, with pins welded into it exact size of pad holes. Will take some pics when I have made the tool.......

Consider yourself lucky that you have a hard-to-remove pad on your Rotex.  I've known some users to have their pads so loosely attached they vibrate off in use, requiring gluing!
