I have recently had a couple of requests for an assortment of abrasives for the RS 2 E.

I have a couple of questions...

First, how much interest is there in such an assortment and second, what would people like to see in it?

I was thinking maybe 20 each of Rubin P 80, P 100, P 120, P 150, P 180 and Brilliant 2 grits P 220, P 240, P 320, P 400.

Thanks in advance for your constructive feedback,

Tom

That would be nice.  It was kinda pricy for me to stock up for the RS2e in various grits.

I'd prefer Brilliant-2 for the P180.  I also don't usually use P100 going straight to P120; maybe I'd do better using the P100... but some of the lower grit sheets like P60 can be useful.  I've used some of those on the RS2e to flatten.  How many slots are in the RS2e sandpaper Systainer?  Maybe save 1 slot for a mix of oddballs like P60 in a lower count.

I was planning on using it for fine sanding and using either my planar or rotex to do the rough stuff. I would prefer a 20+ of each starting at P220 and up. A few of the other lower grits for just in case wouldn't hurt either  but I think those are available in 10 packs [big grin]

Tom,

I’ve had my RS 2E since 2008 and use it continuously for furniture making.  Since I already put together an assortment with the help of Timmy at Festool Junkie, I will not be a potential customer for your assortment, but here are my views based on having a very wide assortment here to choose from.

I bought some Rubin P50 and have never found a use for it, so your start at P80 makes sense.  I also often skip P100.

I like to finish off my sanding with Brilliant 2 regardless which grit I stop at, so I might shift from Rubin to Brilliant sooner than you suggest.  The habit I’ve adopted is to have the last two grits be Brilliant 2.  Where I can, I quickly duplicate the last Rubin grit with the same grit in Brilliant 2 which seems to get the wood smoother faster.

For white oak that will be fumed, I stop at P220 or P320.  For quality furniture wood such as mahogany, walnut and cherry that will be stained with water-based aniline dye I stop at P180.

My current collection duplicates P120 in both Rubin and Brilliant 2, but I now feel that is too coarse a grit for the switch over.  The perfect assortment for me, as a hobbyist furniture maker, would be:

Rubin P 80, P 100, P 120, P 150, and Brilliant 2 grits P 150, P 180, P 220, P 240, P 320, P 400.

If you feel you need to get rid of one of these, the three possibilities might be the Rubin P100, Brilliant 2 P150 and P240, but I would prefer to keep the Brilliant P150.

These are just my views and I suppose for every two woodworkers there will be three suggestions as to what sanding schedule to follow.

Thanks for all your input gent's!

I have finally gotten around to organizing the offering...

I have added an assortment for the RS2 in a T-Loc and one without.

Each assortment has 10 each of Rubin P80, P100, P120, P150, P180 and 20 each of Brilliant 2 P150, P180, P220, P240, P320, P400.

I considered adding P120 Br2 but that is available in 10-packs so I thought I'd simplify... If you order a T-Loc version today, it probably won't go out until tomorrow. The T-Locs are supposed to arrive here later today.

If anyone wants something different, please just call and we can discuss it. I suspect that means you, Steve.

Sounds like your going to need all the CXS drill due to the Today Show spot.

The first batch went pretty fast, Greg. I sold 3 in one visit last week.

The TwinBox bit holders are also quite popular. They have a lot more user-friendly clip than most clip-on things. The part that holds the bits is pretty cool also, it's rubbery. It isn't completely obvious from the descriptions and pictures but it's two holders that also clip together.

Thanks Tom for putting this together. Did I miss what size systainer you were planning on?

RJ  It should be a sys 2 with the RS2 abrasive insert  believe.....Guess I will find out when it gets here

Festool 497688 Systainer SYS-STF 115X228 T-Loc (Replaces 487433)

You're right, Sal!

It's a Sys 2 and the insert for the abrasives holds them on their long side, aligned front to back. I'll put some together tomorrow and post an image. There are 3 main divisions that each have 2 smaller divisions.

I put an assortment together this morning in the Systainer. This image shows how it looks fully populated with the assortment:

I failed to mention that I also have one classic systainer with the insert left. So if you would prefer this assortment in a classic systainer, just let me know.
