I would like to use an RO90 to clean up some rusty, painted metal prior to repainting, but I'm confused on which paper to use.  Saphir is listed for metal, but doesn't seem to be available for the RO90.  Is there another paper that is good to use or should I look at using the Vlies pads?

Thanks, Mike

Welcome to the forum. I'd recommend low grit Granat. Here are some product numbers for the lower grits for the RO 90.

497363 P40
497364 P60
497365 P80

Shane,

Thanks for the welcome and the quick reply.  Granat sound good since I'll also be able to use it for wood and other things.  I'm getting the RO90 primarily for use on wood, but I also have a few metal projects.

I have sanded rusty metal with brilliant in the past, but granat is the go to nowadays.

When finished, I recommend that you remove the pad and clean the tool with compressed air before returning to woodwork.

Mike:

You probably already know this, but I will say it anyway. Mark your paper on the back if you use it for metal so you don't accidentally use the same piece if paper on wood. That could be bad!

Sanding rusty metal can be done with brilliant or granat in grits from 40 to 120, depending on the severity.

But sanding is not efficient enough to remove all the rust. If you want to do it properly, you can better use a wire brush with either an angle grinder or a drill. The wires of the brush not only work quicker, but penetrate deeper into the surface of the metal and remove more rust. It is important that you remove all rust or else it might come back and you have to start all over again. After brushing it you can use a sander with 120 grit to clean it up a bit.

Hi Mike,

Welcome to the forum!  [smile]

You may also want to look into rust converters to put the finishing touch on after getting rid of the majority by sanding.
