Saw blade sharpener

Looks like a machine for cutting keys  ;D

Think I will carry on sending my blades off to get sharpened.

What a rip off from HM! I happened to stumble on this a couple days ago, same machine now temporarily for €179.
At that price i would consider it eventually, if it works ok then it would quickly be payed off.

Nigel,
I don't know where you are in France, but sharpening outfits are becoming more and more rare. Having said that, i'd never try to do it myself. The outfit I use have huge, very sophisticated machines and do a fantastic job - a 60 tooth triple chip blade would be almost impossible to do without a cnc machine imho. As an aside, HM diffusion now have a shop near me in Rouen. Seems strange opening bricks and mortar stores for what was mainly a catalogue firm, but Axminster in the UK have done the same so what do I know? What i do know is tha HM are consistently VERY expensive - but then tools here are generally a rip off. You can always find what HM have on offer for less - even when they have a promo. It's worth buying in the UK at the moment. If you are VAT registered many will ship to France ex Vat.
Regards,
Richard

i think it would be ok for general purpose carpentry (roofing, 1st fix) etc where the cut quality isnt required . anything better than that i dont think it would be acurate enough to sharpen

Thanks for the replies guys.

It's true HM are top dollar,I put the link up because I knew I'd seen it there but I've already found it at nearly half the price  [blink].Not as cheap Timtool's link though! [eek]. Thanks Timtool.Twelve sharpenings would pay for it!

I looked at the UK but couldn't find one anywhere which is very unusual.

Yep, it's probably chinese  but what isn't?

I live in a very rural area so I have  limited choice for sharpening and sometimes it's not fantastic.

I don't know,it seems to me that that anyone who's a bit handy  could sharpen a saw blade with a reasonable machine. All you have to do is hold the blade firmly at the correct angle to the wheel. When you think that the machine in Timtool's  link can in theory sharpen a 700 mm and weighs 38 kg, surely it's man enough to sharpen a few puny little Festool blades?

Imagine thinking : Oh, I'll just sharpen up that blade before ripping that Oak.........

Nigel

I think you should go for it,I know what its like out there you might as well be on the moon for some stuff..

its just like the chainsaw sharpening machines,as long as the angles are good and the blade is held rigidly its all down to the quality of the sharpening medium..

I would check on cost/availability  and duriblity of that maybe get a spare with the machine..

the first lesson i got in woodworking class was to sharpen my chisel correctly and keep it sharp through the year, using a cheap chinese bench grinder with a wheel that isn't round or a €800 tormek sharpener will not make a big difference. What matters is having the technique and quality blades/ chisels.
With this machine i am just a bit worried about heat build up as the wheel is not cooled in water or anything.
What could also matter is how sturdy it is built with how much play and steadiness.

On the moon ha never thought of it like that but you're probably right Footstool  [smile]

As for the heat build up I'm not worried about it because you're only going to be touching the teeth very briefly .I don't think you want to grind away at them.

Here's a video of an even cheaper model at work.Price around 80 euros!
