I think it would be a great feature if we could search for members by locale...I know many people include their location on their posts...I do...but I put a general metro area for a bit of privacy. It would be nice to have a zip code or another field that is not viewable to the public (non members) so that we members can find fellow FOGers.

This is the reason that it is unlikely to have much success.

Or have a complete enough voluntary sign up, so to speak, to be useful. Without zip codes the search will not be very accurate when searching for general area terms.

There is no way that we would make the location, even general, a requirement to peoples profiles.

I agree Seth!...but I can't think of another way to have members meet up. I saw a post today from a member in the same suburb as me and PM'd the person.

Yeah. Well I guess you could try a 'lets meet up' post in the Member Connection board?

I've tried a state search...unfortunately I don't believe that the database field is being searched and even if it were there appears to be no forced data format to ensure it's entered by a member correctly (i.e. IL vs. Illinois vs. ILL)...so really a state/country option needs to be at the very least a search field...am I missing it somewhere?

I think you should be able to do a state search.

Well if you are in Rhode Island that might work. Not so much in Texas.....

I agree that isn't super helpful for Texas, California, or other large states, but it would give a place to start.

Best way to search for members in your area is to make a thread here and see who responds. That way those who are open to it can step forward and the privacy of those who are not is protected.

As far as I'm concerned, and in the light of this forums' purpose, the only part of a members' location that's important is his country so we know how to offer practical solutions.

There isn't currently a way to do what you are desiring.  As Seth said it might not be effective even if it could be custom programmed due to the fact that locations are optional.  I doubt that such a feature will be forthcoming.

We are ~80 miles apart....

I'm little north of San Diego and would like to find others that enjoy working with festoons.
thanks
