That is a great idea, I put a shallow cabinet on the end of my island (35+) years ago that has two brass rods and a couple screws to store pizza, low profile pans and lids.  Much like your serving tray, I've never seen it before.

I like that a lot. It looks like a simple architectural feature (decorative), but is way more functional.
