We need to return our Kapex for repair and it's after the one year free return.  So..., we need to get it to Indiana. NBD, or so we thought.

We happened to have a couple of triple-wall corrugated boxes that, when slid into one another, everything fits and the Kapex is well protected.  [smile]

We drove it to the UPS hub near us and were told, because of it's size and weight, we would only be able to insure it, for up $999.99, for loss, NOT damage, if we shipped it as we packed it, AND it would cost us $200.00.  If they took our box and put in one of their boxes, we could insure it for both loss and damage, but the shipping would be $350.00.  [jawdrop]

There has got to be a better way to get the Kapex to Indiana.  [embarassed]  We could drive it there for less.  [scratch chin]

Does anyone out their have any advice?  For those have returned their Kapex(s), how must did it cost you?

I cannot believe Festool that pays that much to get these things to us.

According to the UPS website, a 50 lb. package from you to us should cost about $34.79 via UPS Ground. Next day was closer to $250. By the way, if you contact service they can provide you with a box I believe.

Edit: Make that $43 with $1000 in insurance, which I forgot.

I got $71.84 on the UPS website using the actual shipping weight (64 lbs.) and dimensions of the official Festool shipping box. I also used $1099 as the insurance value.

Tom

EDIT: I tried it with $1000 as the value and it took a dollar off, $70.84.

EDIT Again: The box I'm describing fits the Kapex box like a glove. Depending on how big the box is, you can be charged significantly for "dimensional weight".

If you took it to a UPS Store(which is a franchise) , your box can be insured up to 1000. Over that amount it has to go to a corporate UPS location. The franchises are allowed to add a surcharge for accepting packages, labor and materials to pack your items, and I have been quoted higher prices for shipping rates too.

Instead we pack it ourselves and then pay and print the  shipping label online then drop it off at Office Depot or take it to the UPS corporate location at the airport.

If you enter a residential address vs. a business address you may be charged more.

Another option is to use FedEx and drop it off at Kinko's.

That's close to what we found when we checked their web site as well.  However, once we packed it up and went the to UPS hub, we were told the numbers I noted in my post.

Perhaps it was the size of the box.  Since we used a slightly larger and heavy duty box to protect the precious cargo, ;), that may have been a factor.

After I replied to Shane, I thought about it some more and your reference to dimensional weight just may be what we were quoted.  Since someone tossed the original Kapex box, we used what was on hand.

Hmmm....

See my post re: "blade guard sticking" . I shipped my Kapex from So.Ca. to Indiana in the box that it came in, thru UPS with $1500.00 insurance and it cost about $88
It returned in different box inside another box. Well worth it in my opinion.

I was in the second year of warranty and had to ship it from canada. Brought it to lee valley, paid the $15 and they took care of the rest. I thought this was a standard practice?

Unfortunately, we have no Festool B&M's in our area, so, most purchases are from one of the dealers with a FOG presence so there is no place to drop anything off for return to Festool, Indiana.

The closet dealer to us is Delaware.  Which is not such a bad thing; it being in Delaware. i.e. no sales tax.

I say all this with the assumption your purchase was from Lee Valley. ???

Actually if it was in the second year of warranty it would not have been bought at Lee Valley - the started carrying Festool less than a year ago.

No it was not. I purchased it from Hafele, but due to it being farther from where I live and work and Lee Valley's inherent awesomeness, I took it there. They told me this was their first warranty claim they had to do and they even had a sheet outlining the procedure for items not purchased at their store. I was impressed at the turnaround time too - less than 2 weeks.

That is very interesting.

While the B&M Festool dealer nearest me, Woodcraft of Wilmington, is about 40-50 miles away, I would have no difficulty with coming up with some excure for visiting the store.  [wink]  That is, if they would (have) provide(d) the same service as Lee Valley.

Green, If you can have the box picked up from a business, go Fed-x Ground, they are much cheaper then UPS...
