I wanted to make something that had a very specific vibe to it.. there's a soulfulness I associate with some of the older houses in California - particularly the ones up north of San Francisco around Sea Ranch or Mendocino. You get a sense that some of these places had more energy/creativity than resources and so they made up interesting solutions with readily available parts and materials, and generally uncomplicated geometry. Theres a bit of a modern pioneering ethos there.  Or at least, that's how I read it.

The basic idea for these shelves is not original to me - I think there's an old article in fine woodworking where a similar design was highlighted. I've seen the same kind of construction in an AirBnB we stayed in near Olympic national park.  Basically, just uprights with dados for joinery.

The uprights are walnut, as is the edging. All are offcuts from the boards I broke down for making the table in my other recent post.

I made the shelves by laminating 3/4 MDF with Solar Orange Formica in my vacuum press. For those curious about it, I laminated using Elmers Glue All, and it works very very well. I also roughed up the MDF w/ 80g paper on my Rotex beforehand - enough to ensure that the surface was unburnished and that it had reasonable 'tooth' to it.  The shelves are held in place by a single 2" spax MDF/hardwood screw at each joint. Those screws are buried under face grain plugs.

The finish is 3 coats of Osmo Polyx.  Please ignore the painters tape on the hinge in the background :-)
