Shop lighting/electrical question

In my shop, I have a fluorescent light that has finally died.  I have plug in LED shop lights I will be replacing with.  The flourescent is wired to the light switch.  What I am looking to accomplish is to take down the existing and put an outlet in its place, so I can plug the new LED light right next to the fixture.  So my first question, is what I am looking to do realistic?  How would I go about wiring the new outlet?  Does the old light being on a switch complicate things?  I don't want to hire an electrician for what most would consider a simple job, but I am just not confident due to little experience with electrical work.

Fairly easy.  Just put an outlet box where old light ended. Add out let and now the switch controls the outlet/light. Pretty straight fwd. You can cut the wires back or put in a junction box and add if youre moving the light.

If the existing light is hardwired, there is probably a junction box up there already.  You might be able to connect the wires to the new outlet and screw that right to the junction box.  Add a trim plate and you’re in business.

If you haven't got a lot of experience, doing one outlet is a great place to start.  Even better if there is already a line where you want to put it.

A few things that I've learned rewiring some of my house:

  • Be mindful about how you fold your wires into the box.  It makes a big difference in how easy it is to get the device back in.
  • Also, make sure you have at least 7" extending past the face of the box before you cut any off.
  • Good connections are critical. Either with wire nuts or wago lever nuts, make sure you have a very very solid tight connection.
  • Clock your screws  ;)
  • If you feel like you don't understand something, keep reading/writing/diagramming until you do.  If you still don't feel confident about it, call the electrician.
