Matthew, with all of the international representation here, is it possible to show where a member is from, without checking out there profile. Maybe it could be below the name, some members already do this, me included. It is just nice to know and it would keep my from recommending that someone from Holland send a blade to be sharpened here to the US, again.

Brice,
There are software enhancements that do in fact make it so we can tell where everyone is from.  But for it to work, I have to require that everyone enter location information.

There are options for creating a map, with "push pins" representing each member.  There is also the option of having the name of the country and/or the country flag appear below each person's name.

You make a good point about using information about member locations.  I'd be happy to implement a location feature, if there is high enough demand among members.

Thanks,
Matthew

Then, I demand it, well you know what I mean. ;D ;D ;D

Me too (do we have a quorum yet)?

It could be just country, does not have to be personal identifying information.

Well, it look like there is a good amount of interest in this.  Let's see where this discussion goes.

Couple of points to consider and discuss...

For this to be effective, we would have to require all members to enter location information (country only).  That means existing members would have to edit their profiles.

Would you want to have just the member's country name, or would you also want to display a flag icon?

Carry on.

I see others with thier location listed in posts however I can not figure out how to turn it on.

Here are the steps to make your location publicly visible:
1. Click on "PROFILE" in the main menu near the top of the page.
2. On the left-hand side of the next screen, click "Forum Profile Information" (under "Modify Profile").
3. On the next screen, scroll about half-way down the page.  You'll see a section for "Personal Text."  Type in your location in the space provided.
4. Click the "Change Profile" button at the bottom of the page.

Note that there is another space on this page for entering "location," "gender," and "birthdate" information.  But this information is not displayed publicly unless there is a modification to the software, which is what we're talking about in this discussion!

Let me know if that helps.

I've deleted the cookies and relogged in and still doesn't show. I generally use FireFox as a browser and I also tried Netscape and MSIE and it does not show in all three browsers.

ejantny,
I must be tired today!

The location information is not publicly displayed.  That's what we're discussing in the forum right now.  To have the software display your location, you enter it in the "Personal Text" field!

I need to install a software modification to display the location information.

I rewrote the instructions above to properly explain how to publicly display your location.

Thanks for helping out and being so observant!

Matthew

I'm for it too, but perhaps without the flag.

What would we have to put in to have a Jolly Roger flag?  ;D Or a golden apple flag?  ::)

Me and the Lad live in a lovely valley in Mid-Wales, United Kingdom.

Everyone,
There is a planned release of SMF 2.0 coming up in the next couple of months.  I've seen the beta version, and it has a lot of great enhancements!  I'm very excited about it.  I'll be posting a general message soon about this.

The reason I bring it up here is because one of the enhancements in the new SMF version is an improved location feature.

So, for now, we can discuss how we would want to reveal location, then when the new version of SMF is released I can set it up.
