Single Drawer Sortainer?

I swear I saw such an animal somewhere. Maybe one of @semenza's Frankentainer threads... Anyway, I have the Festool Systainer3 ToolBag 577501 and have some things I'd much prefer in a Sortainer drawer attached to the bottom. While I could get a larger Sortainer, I really want to leave it attached to the bottom so I can grab the bag and go. Where I store the bag currently only has 5 1/4" of extra clearance which seems to put it at a Sys1 profile.

Any ideas?

Are you meaning the Combo 2 Paul? The Festool part number for us in OZ for it is 8043537.

They don't make a Systainer solo drawer. However, Tanos just released in the USA this toolbox that may be a nice accompaniment to your toolbag. It's an M287 size so not as tall as the M337 luv pictured. And it comes in anthracite which might match the toolbag better.

No, I have the toolbag:

I presume you are thinking of the Systainer³ Rack M 154:

Unfortunately it is taller than a Sys1: 154mm. The height is unusual, but it matches a Systainer³ Rack M 337 with 2 layers removed. It could already be done with T-loc SYS Sort systainer, to add or remove drawers.

Ah! Yes! That T-Loc thread and that video was what I remembered but not how to find. Thanks! Not sure I can get those things anymore. Does seem a shame to buy one and toss out a layer, but I could also buy two: one becomes a single drawer and the other gets the spare parts.

I did see the Rack version and actually have it in my cart somewhere as it may work. Just seems like I'd lose some space and be length-limited. The primary reason for the drawer is to store longer, heavier tools.

There are no single drawer sortainers but you can easy-peasy make one yourself in ten minutes by simply removing or adding as many drawer compartments as you like. I used a Sys 4 TL / Sort 3 and a Sys 2 TL / Combi to make a two drawer Combi systainer and a two drawer Sortainer. By simply removing the spacer pieces between the top and bottom layers you can also mod it to one drawer only and use the remaining two drawers elsewhere. The Gen3 systainers offer even more cool modding features with the recent addition of the double sized drawer and the Tanos Sys³ Combi Box M237 (limited edition, they produce a batch once in a blue moon).

It is unclear to me, what you started with, what you switched around, and whether this can be done without cutting or gluing.

Paul asked for a single drawer Sortainer option which simply doesn't exist. What does exist are Sortainers with 2 drawers (one large, one small), 3 drawers (three small ones) and Combi's (regular systainer top with a sortainer bottom). So let me rephrase as I didn't take pics:
  1. A sortainer is made of a unique top part (holds the handle), a unique bottom part and two spacers in between that surround each drawer on three sides (evident from the hairline seams on a sortainer's outside)
  2. remove all drawers from your sortainer and you'll see that these spacers clip together from the inside.
  3. unlatch those clips with a bit of force and you can disassemble the whole sortainer into its different parts (1 top, 2 spacers, 1 bottom plate), no cutting required.
  4. Reassemble those parts any way you want by clipping as many spacers between a top and a bottom as you want drawers; if you want just one drawer (what Paul is after) clip just a top and bottom together, et voilà.
  5. Use the remaining spacers and drawers to pimp any other Sortainer / Sys Combi / Combi box any way you please. The biggest I've come across was a five drawer sortainer, the smallest is a single drawer unit.
What I modded in the picture:
Left side used to be a Sys 2 Combi (regular systainer top, 1 sortainer style drawer beneath)
Right side used to be a Sys 4 TL / Sort 3 Sortainer (which consists of 3 drawers)
I removed one spacer and one drawer from the right unit and implanted it into the Combi systainer on the left.
That way I ended up with 2 + 2 drawers instead of 1 + 3

Hope that helps

@Hawkeye0001 , have you tried this with a Sys3 sortainer? Are the clips the same?

I pulled the drawers out, and the clips were easy to find. But it feels like I will have to use so much force that I will break something. Is there a trick?

I've only done it with the T-Loc variants so far, but it should work exactly the same. Admittedly those clips are a bit of a b*tch to get lose though; I used wedges between the spacers back then but check out this guys video. If you have small clamps that can spread or own viking arms (or have Viking arms?) it seems to work much smoother.

Great video clip! So I guess they don’t make a single drawer but one can make one…not sure of the use (*)but you could put one in a stack if needed
Edit; * for me

I try to keep each drawer dedicated to a specific task, containing everything I need for that task. This works fine in the garage, but it feels silly to carry a complete 3-drawer systainer anywhere outside the garage if I know I will only use one drawer.

To take this thought further: Right now I have 4 systainers with 3 drawers each. If I rearrange them to 1, 2, 4 and 4 drawers, I will have a size for every situation. The drawers can be switched around on the fly, and they are individually marked, so it will be very easy to pack a sortainer with just the drawers I need, no matter how many I need.

It doesn't add up? I know. I will have a drawer in excess. I have another sortainer with 1 large + 1 small drawer, and that sortainer is in dire need of an extra drawer.

There was a Classic sort with a single drawer layer. Had the shallow drawers. Which could be two half width or four quarter width or two 1/4 and one 1/2.

Ah, maybe that's what I'm remembering. I do love this thread, though, for all the mods. While I've modified several of my tools, I never modified any Systainers, which seems like a silly oversight.

It does seem like the Combi boxes have a different way to attach the drawer section: the top and bottom parts reach halfway down the sides of the drawer. I'll tinker when my two Systainer³ Sortainer/3 M 337 arrive. I do have a Combi I can play with just to see. I also ordered that Rack M 154 with 2 minis (so, one layer). Will be an interesting playtime.
