After 5 so so tries, I found a neat way to attach a breadboard end to a 33" wide oak bed headboard.
I made a wide tenon 8mm thick and cut a 10mm slot in the end.

I made a jig for this cut that I am not showing.
Next, I cut an 8mm wide mortise in the end of the headboard and then cut a 10mm slot intersecting the 8mm mortise.
