Does this base also replace the need for the router support (438608)?  There is what appears to be a Festool video that says it does (at about 8minute mark).

Yet the only post I could find that addresses this (although not from Festool) is a few years old and it says no it will not work:

Could you resolve for me?  It would be really nice to just snap this base on for rail work.  Thanks in advance.

Also, how big is the hole in this base?

Many thanks...

The small bore base is slightly thicker than 3mm. To properly offset the guide rail, it would need to be 5mm.

The hole is 20mm diameter.

Thanks, Tom.

Why then would Festool on what appears to be their video make the statement on the attached screen capture that it would?  I guess more importantly is anyone using this base to replace the router support and does work OK for you?  Thx.

Perhaps the answer to your question is that it's "close enough"?

I just measured it and the nominal stack of a guide rail that the router would be sitting on is supposedly 5mm.

I just realized that you are talking about the router completely off the guide rail... Please disregard my other posts.

In that situation, the small bore base should work. There is enough wiggle room with the rods to make the guide stop work fine.

The foot is used to give that extra 5mm support when the base of the router is sitting on the guide rail so the overhang part of the router isn't riding on air.

Thanks, Tom.

Yes, off the rail.  I was tempted to ask if 3+mm versus 5mm was "close enough" too.  But then said hey these are Festool's with tenth of mm depth adjustments...so no its not close enough  [big grin]

Interestingly, an added benefit of using this base on the router and using the router off the rail is that it allows me to turn the router so the depth gauge faces the user and the handle on the right side (assumes router is between you and rail).  Of course you could set the rail between you and router for same effect.  Upshot is it seems if you are working off the rail this base give you more flexibility in how you work.

Thanks.  Sorry I wasn't clear that I was meaning off the rail.
