Smoke on my Domino 700

Hey All.

I was using my Domino 700 on ipê wood. 14mm bit and I may forced too much. In fact I should be more careful. 6mm inside the wood it made a pop sound and smelled electric burn.

Question: shouldn't it have an electronic overload protection circuit? ??? ???

Ari,

The Domino XL does have our MMC electronics, which include overload and thermal protection. I would only be speculating regarding what might have happened. The best option would be to get in touch with service.

I already made contact with then and I'm packing the machine to post it.

I'm big fan of Festool but got surprised about it.

As soon as I have any news, I'll let you know. And here goes my suggestion: DF700 must have a protection circuit ready for ipê wood!!

Dear Shane, I'am trying to understand what went wrong. I do not intend to criticize nothing because I'm a Festool enthusiast over any thing. But I need to understand what went wrong so after it's repair, I do not burn it again. In Brazil every tool is way too expensive because of all the taxes we have to pay. The Festool Domino XL is sold here for about USD 2.500. So I can't afford to burn is again.

My question is: what is the difference between MMC Electronics and Electronics:

Understanding this difference may  help me  understand how much care I have to be using the Domino XL on hard woods.

The difference would be that "electronics" would be a subset of the MMC electronics package. I guess I was mistaken, apologies.

Are you using dust extraction with your Domino?

With Ipe being such a very hard wood, you would want to regulate your plunge speed to be slower than usual, of course.

I just used my 700 on Ipe end grain. I did have to adjust the plunge rate slightly, more for dust collection than anything.

Do you know what your line voltage is?

About dust extraction, I use a Makita VC3210LX1 extractor which is very powerful:

Air volume : 3,5 m³/min
Vacuum : 22 kpa (2,240mm H²O)
Power : 1.050W

It produces a very strong vacuum and cleans the work very easily. Thanks for your concern !

Tom, probably my plunge rate was wrong and as I got used to MMC feature on TS55, Rotex etc, I never would expect a situation like that.

Voltage in Brasília is 220V 60Hz. And my shop is very well served. I have no volt drop.

The reason I asked about dust extraction is because if the mortise is not being cleared of chips, it can cause issues.

I have a Festool dust extractor on my sight but this Makita one is working well for now.

Lessons learned until now:

➜ Domino XL does have electronic speed control but does not have overload protection circuitry

➜ Working on hard woods like ipê, your plunge rate must be absolutely controlled and slow

➜ The balance between holding the so heavy Domino XL in place: you can use your force in the up & down way to stabilize it but must be very careful and gentle on the plunge rate

➜ 14mm may be too much for hardwood
