I am looking for a source for 8mm collet for Porter Cable router 7539. I have it mounted in router table and would like to use 8mm router bits in it. I am told by Porter Cable they no longer stock them. I use them in the OF1010 and OF1400 and it would be nice to be able to use in the table.

You may try Highland Hardware in Atlanta.  I have purchased 8mm collets from them in the past for both PC and Bosch routers.

Thanks, Highland Hardware does have a large stock of Porter Cable collets and they had mine. I owe you big time. Thanks again for the post.

Craftsman Gallery (chipsfly.com) sells a line of 8mm shank router bits (HSS) from England. And so they stock 8mm collets to fit North Amer. 1/2 inch routers.

I also saw they stocked 8mm Reducing Sleeve to go in a 1/2 inch collet. That might be handy. Thanks for the site.

I have used both the PC collet and the reducing adapter. Both work fine. For using the PC 8mm collet, just the same as any collet, do not bottom out the 8mm bit. Leave 1/8" space at bottom. For using the adapter, line up the slots of the adapter with the slots of the collet and dont bottom out here as well. I don't like 1/4" bits but do like to use the 8mm bits. Those from Craftsmans Galley (www.chipsfly.com) are HSS and not carbide tipped. For doing dovetails, the HSS give you a much finer cut particularly in the smallest sizes.

Dear Andrea poses with one of the small drawers that used a 1/4" 7degree DT HSS bit. It gave such great tiny DTs. I don't think there is a carbide tipped bit that size.

Steve, I also want to thank you for the Highland Woodworking source!  Just ordered an 8mm collet for my monster PC -- $21.99 plus S&H (In my case, an additional $6.99).  Now I'll have to check out the Festool bits...  and the new catalog will be arriving shortly.

Oh - John!  With an 8mm collet, 1/8" won't do.  It must be a 3mm space at the bottom.  ;D
