Source for rough (non- S2S) hard wood?

Hi all,

I'm wanting to get a combo jointer/planer and start surfacing my own stock to make sure it's nice and flat with no twists.

My problem is finding a source for this. Out in Denver, I had a place where I go and pick through the stock rough, then decided how I wanted it (straight edge only, S2S, etc).

But out here in Cali, I can't seem to find anyplace that will do that, especially for QS Oak. The only local place we have (Mayan Hardwoods) won't do it unless I order a "full unit" from them. They claim "well, how would we know if it was quarter sawn if we didn't plane it down first?"  [blink]

I'm here on the central coast, about midway between LA and SF. Anybody know of a place where I could go pick through the rough stacks and take it as is? I'd be willing to drive a couple hours to do it, heck maybe even to the LA or SF, just need to know a place. It's not like there's a category in the yellow pages for woodworking lumber suppliers!

Are there any internet places that ship that you'd recommend?

Here's a thread I started back in July regarding Bell Forest Products:  http://festoolownersgroup.com/member-projects/bell-forest-products-photo-story/msg113969/#msg113969  They're not in California, but they are an internet source and they will try to accomodate your needs in any way they can.  Check out their website and give them a call to see what they can do for you - ask for Eric if he's available; although anybody should be able to help you out.

Macbeath Hardwood in San Jose , 2211 Ringwood Ave, 408-526-9663 is a great place for hardwoods and high end plywood. The flagship store is in SF, also a store in Berkeley.  I find the SJ store friendly and helpful.I do not know if they carry QSWO, but they do carry cherry, maple and other species.  They will let you pick the boards that you want.

Groff & Groff Lumber in Pennsylvania will ship unsurfaced lumber.

Shipping to California (I'm on the central coast too) isn't cheap, but their prices are pretty good, and when you consider that there's no sales tax and no gasoline bills for driving to L.A. or S.F., you might be surprised.

I don't know California at all, but you might try Craig's List for someone milling timber from your area.  I found several not  far from me and now buy regularly from one I now know and trust.  It is much less expensive than a lumber yard or woodworkign store, although sometimes a bit rougher.
