Splinter Guards

Question - I have a TS55 and use a splinter guard. It never seems in the way and cuts are great. So my question is - why is this "optional"- that is, I assume there must be some disadvantage to the SG or they would just come standard like this - no? Does anyone use the clear window (non- SG) to see end of cut or something?

Gets in the way on bevel cuts, and can get worn out after a while and so needs replacement.  But yeah, if it's a straight cut I use it.

Can't be used with the Cover Plate either.
