Does anyone have any recommendations for spray application of stain sealer?

I have a good amount of cedar picket fence that needs to be sealed. I am planing to use Flood CWF-UV and was thinking of using something like a Wagner power sprayer to apply it. Any thoughts or recommendations for the application process and or the exact model of sprayer I should use to do it?

I have other sprayers I would use.

That said, the Wagner Power Painter with some practice should work for you.

Spray only on a calm day, wind will be you're enemy.

One thing I neglected to mention, if it is ruff cedar, you may have to back brush.

The cedar is smooth, or fairly so, I am going to hit some rough spots with a sander first.

I do not currently own a Wagner sprayer, is there another brand or type you would recomend?

Take a look at the Graco hand held units. You'll have to decide if the price difference is worth it for this project.

I have an old Wagner, it still works when I need it. I've used the Graco, not sure I'd buy one because I have to many other choices that will cover its application.

For comparison look at the Wagner Pro Painter Max and the Graco Pro Shot 2.

I took a trip to my local big box and they have clearanced out a number of their graco units. I talked with one of the guys there and he was trying to talk me out of buying one of the sprayers but just get a cheap lawn and garden pump sprayer to apply the stain and back brush. Any thoughts on this?

I had a deck sprayer built like a pump sprayer. It lasted about 4 jobs before the solvents gummed up the works. It may work fine for your use. A garden sprayer may not have a large enough nozzle to allow product flow.

I got a corded Wagner stain sprayer from the big box store.  I hated it.  It wouldn't stay sealed.  It went through the product very quickly.  Constantly refilling the small container.  It came with a hose to hook up to a gallon container but that was a even more of a pain.  I could have rolled the product on faster than spraying and cleaning the damn machine.  You can have it.  I know Tim Allen from Tool Time will disagree, but rolling it with a long handle isn't that much slower than spraying it.

If you can find a "volunteer" to cut the edges in front of you rolling, it may be faster to roll than spray and roll. I find it faster when alone, to get product on the surface a little then use the excess do the hand work.

The pump sprayer I picked up comes with a few different spray patterns and lists deck and fence stain applications right on the packaging. I might just give it a shot and have a roller ready to go if things go south. The fence is a spaced picket design so I was just hoping to speed the process a bit. [wink]

A "volunteer" may be just the ticket. Instead of figuring out what the best sprayer for the job may be pick up a copy of Tom Sawyer and see how a real pro gets a fence done.  [poke]

Nice! I'm sure my 2-1/2 year old would LOVE to "help" me! [scared]

Update:

I sanded and sealed the fence last weekend. I ended up paying $50 for a Wagner Opti-Stain sprayer and it worked beautiful! Nice even spray and only took about 20mins to clean up.

Nice to see it got done. More than I can say for some (okay, most) of my home projects.
