Stair experts: how would you handle this corner?

I'm about to scribe the skirt boards for the stairway I'm remodeling (from the first floor to the basement, a retrofit), and I can see that the stair just before the landing is too close to the corner to allow for the skirt board to properly meet the longer skirt board for the bottom section of stairs (see pic...the upper skirt will be higher than the lower one when they meet at the corner).  What would be the traditional or best way to transition this corner?

Not sure of your question. I'd bevel them around that corner. Are you saying the heights of the two skirt boards will be different? If so which will be taller.

I am confused also...  are you scribing the top one first?  If you do that then the bottom one, you should be fine.

This is what I did in my house... a little different, but might help.

Yes, I will be scribing the top section first (above the landing), but because the bottom step is so close to the corner, there is no room to bring the rake to baseboard height or to the height of where the top of the lower skirt board will end up (just like in Bryan's pic).

Make a corner plinth block to run the two scribed boards into, like the used to do on old houses where the skirting met the door architraves.

If you used 1x whatever and a top cap you could make a plinth block the height of the upper skirt board and mount it on the short side wall. Next bevel the top cap around, bring it over and then miter it down to meet the top cap of the lower skirt.

Bevel the bottom of the top skirt and the side of the plinth around that corner and it'll look like a single piece.

I was thinking the same thing. Sounds like the best solution in this situation and most pleasing visually. I think I would make the block about 3 to 5 inches wide. Hard to judge in a photo. I think you should try a couple different widths to see which looks best. I'd at a minimum round over the outside corner or maybe a full bead, it would depend on what fits with the rest of the stair.
