surfix questions

hi,

first post here.

i have used the surfix oil system a handful of times with decent results. however, i really dont feel confident i understand the process i am doing. i have a couple questions which i will list right here:

1) the instructions say to wait 15 minutes before buffing. should i buff after exactly 15 minutes regardless of what the work piece looks like? is the oil supposed to be wet, starting to dry, or totally dry when i buff?

2) how can i tell when the vlies pads are used up? are they still good to use if they are coated in wax? i'm attaching a photo of a pad after buffing 30 square feet of hard maple. is this pad trash?

3) what is the work piece supposed to look like immediately after buffing? how long do i buff the piece for? should it be wet, dry, sticky, something else?

4) is it okay to wait longer then 8 hours between coats or is that timing important?

1) Anytime after 15 minutes but before the oil has cured/hardened. Usually 15-45 minutes open time. Either coat.

2) Pad can be covered and work fine. Run it across sand paper to deglaze it. I do this under power. Saturated is bad.

3) First coat, even dull. Very slightly damp for about 4 hours, tacky about 24 hours. Second coat buffed even, will be medium bright hand rubbed look.

4) I've had to wait up to 24 hours between coats. The more dense the wood the slower the cure. I've had the second coat take up to 4 days to harden/cure.

Did you wait until completely dry between coats and sand to 320-400 before applying the second coat

The majority will be dry. A slight tack does not hurt, uses more paper.

sounds like i havent been waiting long enough between coats. i let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes and then immediately start hitting it with the green vlies. its often pretty wet still and the pads gunk up really fast. i should wait for it to be mostly dry before using the vlies pad?

It would be nice if these type of brochures were available on the Festool website & on the FOG!

I've run across one on finishing, edge banding, automotive finishing, polishing wood etc. There seems to be a lot of them out there, unfortunately, they're not at a single location so it's catch-as-catch-can
