SW doesn't want to custom tint anymore?

So I called down to my SW pro finishes store and asked them for a gallon of KA+ tinted to a RAL color.  The guy who answered said they don't do that anymore because it ties up the production process because of how time consuming it is to mix a color.  Apparently they don't have a fancy machine like we see in the big box stores and they measure by hand.  He even said they don't want to tint even if I buy in 5 gallon quantities.

There's 1 total store in Denver that sells KA+ which fundamentally prevents me from using KA+ anymore (unless I'm cool with making everything white or if I plan to make 100 cabinets for my kitchen).  Now it looks like I'll need to find another product to shoot unless someone knows the magic handshake.

I'm bummed.

Sounds like something funny going on there.  Try moving up the chain of command.

This is the store you want. If they won't do it let me know. Countryside will do it and Fex Ex the material to you.

I'll be back I your area in about 2 weeks. Just spent 7 weeks there.

BM Lenmar would be your next choice.

I'm am home owner not a pro. However, my personal experience is that I've tried SW and Benjamin Moore paints top interior and exterior top blends. BM paints are standing the test of time better than SW and they cost less. In my area, unless you are a pro with a business account the SW paints are 20% more expensive. If you need to do touch-ups you can get most BM paints in the little trial containers, similar finishes in SW are 1 gallon minimum.

Maybe it's my local store. I don't know, I don't shop there any longer. The pro I use for big jobs swears they are great but I'm thinking that may be related to the discount he gets on his purchases.

YMMV

Tried.  I ended up with the production manager.  Unless I'm going to commit to 1000 units over 6 months they can't justify a color match or custom tint unless they already have it on book (they've done it before).  I still can't believe they're spending 8 hours to get to a RAL color.  If I were them I'd have to have a better way.

I'm half wondering I that store just doesn't want to mess with the smaller guy anymore because they're busy enough serving the bigger guy.  [crying]

Are you referring to big box store paints?  Fairly certain that the SW in a big box store is not in the same league as the SW KA+ paints.  I've sprayed a lot of different paints and the KA+ lays down, levels extremely well, and has great adhesion.  I've not tried all the paints at the BB's so if there is something in the same league, please let me know,  The SW industrial finishes store is way the hell across town and the drive is non-trivial.

A good color match can be time consuming to get right. Sure they can do a computer match, but those usually needed to be adjusted by eye after the computer's tried it's best.

The Pro finishes stores aren't intended to serve homeowners and KA+ wasn't intended to be used by typical homeowners either. My SW rep even said my local Pro finishes store can be very difficult to work with if you're not an OEM or high volume shop.

It's a bummer for folks like you, because I'm guessing you're not like the typical DIY client.

What's really interesting is that I found out when ordering the Festool grey color - RAL 7035.  They said it would take too much time to color match.  I said I don't give a crap if it's exact.  They said it takes hours.  I was on the phone nearly speechless picturing some dude adding one drop at a time until the color match-ometer lights up with a flashing EXACT on the display.

Hell I even explained that their version of close was probably more accurate than what I even hoped for.  I might be the easiest customer they've ever had in that regard.  The production manager's response was "doesn't matter, it takes too long".

You're right that someone will literally add one drop at a time in some instances to get a color right. I've had some matches where we've had to make 5-7 adjustments to get it right. One time I was trying to match a Hunter Green and I gave up because we couldn't get it to match.

Maybe if you can find an SW color that's close to RAL 7035 then they'll do it for you.

Yes. Let me text Chris tomorrow morning and found out what can be done about this.

Lenimar is now owned by Benjamin Moore. Call a local store and see if they can help.

I appreciate the help.  I'll call a local BM store tomorrow and check them out.  At the end of the day I don't really care if it's SW or BM but I am a man of habit.  Once I become comfortable I really like to stick with what I know.

Thanks again.

Or Clint Eastwood.  They'd do it for all three without hesitation.
