My DF500 would not shut off. This started happening after the 2nd use. I sent it to Festool repairs and they replaced the switch and sent it back. After the first use, it happened again. When I returned it the second time, the problem did not duplicate at the repair site. They went ahead and replaced the switch again, but I haven't tried it yet. Anyone else have this problem?

Hi,

My 500 has the same problem, it won't stop after pulling the switch back(though sometimes it works normally again). Haven't reported it or sent it in yet, but It' s a small nuisance when I use the auto button on the vacuum as switch.

edit: at the moment the switch works fine. Hopefully it will stay that way.

I have had the same problem. Sent it for repair and they replaced the switch. I have'nt used it since it has been back other than to test.

That switch has a rather odd operation. Are you certain it isn't OK?

I have not.  Mine has been fine so far.....  I've had and used it for several months now.

Hi everyone,

Sorry i know this is a very old thread but i just encountered the same problem. The machine wont turn off now and i couldn’t find useful information on repair for this online. My Df500 is out of warranty so i will try to fix it myself. Has anyone successfully dismounted the df500 to access the switch ? I tried removing the 4 screws on the plastic « handle » and the one next to the power cord but it seems something else is retaining it and i don’t want to break anything by forcing it out.
Thanks for your help !

If you haven't already, head over to ekat.festool.com and look up the parts diagram for the DF500.  By examining the parts diagram, you should be able to find out which screw/fastener you may be missing.

You will also need that diagram to get the part number for the switch if you end up needing to replace it.

If you have the original manual for the unit, the exploded diagram should be included in the manual as well, but it's not as easy to zoom in/out. :)

Welcome to the FOG!

My very very old 500 is sometimes fussy about turning off. Usually, I have to apply backwards and downward pressure.

The DF 500 has a terrible switch mechanism design. Its essentially a long arm mechanism to flick a plunger switch on/off. There is a chance the internal switch still works, but has become so stiff that the arm mechanism cant flick the switch to the off position.

Your best bet is to just replace the internal switch with a new one. The casing of the switch is potted, so no chance of tearing it down and fixing it.

Part# FESTOOL 492779

I had this on my 2014 DF500 as well a year ago. The plastic plunger on the switch seized. Tried to free it up but it wouldn't work so purchased a new switch which had a different part number than my original so maybe festool have updated it. It was very easy to replace at least.

I have the same won't-turn-off problem on my DF500.  I just ordered the replacement switch part recommended by cresend.

One poster said that replacing the switch was easy.  Can you describe the steps?  I haven't received my replacement switch yet, so I don't know if it comes with instructions.

Thanks!

It likely will not come with instructions; the spare parts are sold with an implicit assumption that the purchaser is aware of how to replace them.

That said, if you still have the owner's manual, it should include an exploded parts diagram that should help guide you in the direction of how to take it apart to get to the switch.  One thing to keep in mind is that the tool itself was built to be repairable, so if you're disassembling and something seems like it won't come apart, don't force it; look for another screw that you overlooked.

Work slowly and methodically and you should be able to get it knocked out and reassembled without too much difficulty.
