Hello FOG, long time lurker but this is my first post.

I have gained ideas and inspiration from this group for a long time so Thank You for that.

Putting final drawings together for a Sysport. I bought the plywood (ouch) and am ready to start making sawdust.

There is a series of instructional videos from Festool Australia and their wall was definitely part of my inspiration.

Here is what I have planned...

Blue squares across the middle are wooden boxes with acrylic fronts on pull out shelves. (I have a small parts storage cabinet on that wall now which will need to be replaced) The boxes will be 105mm so they are interchangeable with T-Loc 1's.

Question... Do you have experience with Sortainers. The 6 drawer Sortainers might be a better solution but I would miss the transparent fronts and not sure how easy they are to get in and out of the box. Which would you use? Sortainers or custom shop-built boxes?

Question... LR 32 or not. Since I am combining T-Loc and Sys3 am I better off just drilling each drawer slide exactly where it needs to be or does the LR 32 give me enough flexibility? I received my LR 32 a week ago and haven't gotten to experiment yet.

Question... Casters or not. Trying to decide between a standard cabinet with toe-kick or mobile on casters. Opinions?

Question... The green strip across the back of the box is just to show there is a back... The gray melamine looks just like the wall in SketchUp but it isn't in real life. Would you make the back of the cabinet Festool gray or finished wood?

The tool storage (display?) boxes across the top can be used as storage for additional Systainers for future growth. See upper right hand box...

Here is what I am thinking for the drawers... Box widths are 427mm just in case I change my mind to the Sys-AZ later.

I built a mock-up of the drawer and with 1/4" deep channels the Systainer locks into place nicely.

The dude in the picture is 6'4" like me but he is a lot skinnier...

Thanks for any constructive thoughts you might have!

That looks terrific!

I almost always vote yes on LR32. But that’s because I worry about not being able to commit to a layout, and I like to build in as much flexibility as possible. If you want to take the time to put holes every 16mm instead of 32, I highly doubt you’ll run into spacing problems with the combination of SYS3 and T-Loc. One problem you may run into if you’re considering switching between or mixing SYS-AZ drawers with your own is the placement of the LR32 holes. At that point, you’re looking at maybe four rows of holes, which may be more trouble than it’s worth.

It feels awfully big and tall to me, and I worry that having it on casters might present a tipping risk. I would probably just go ahead and attach something that large to the wall.

Hi, I’ve just been through all of these recently (See my tool storage thread).
It’s a good idea to to go with the 427mm spacings but in adddition I would set your LR32 insets/spacings to suit the AZ runner spacing. I wouldn’t worry about the different sizes of sys3 as you are only ever going to be 16mm out max. I’ve used a combination of AZ drawers and shelves with full height LR32 adjustment which makes the whole space very adaptable. The other thing I did was to make individual modules of 427mm + sides and finish the ends with full height end panels. It does use a lot more material but if I need to expand the wall I can just make and insert another module keeping the aesthetics all balanced.

And as the Dr said,
I would avoid casters at that height and would also recommend a fixing back to wall.

I am in the process of designing my
Own too.  Do you know which drawer runners you will be using?

Thanks for the input! Good advice on the casters. Going with traditional cabinet bottom and will secure it to the wall.

Sanjay, I think I will go with the Knape and Vogt 14" full extension soft close. I have had great success with them in the past and a bad experience with another brand. Just sticking with what I know.

I'm a fan of mobility so I can clean out and reposition if necessary, but a unit that big needs to be anchored. I wonder if having the appropriate number of casters, plus anchoring it to the wall would work? Take the Systainers and tools off if/when you need to move it, then put it back in place, anchor, then load everything back up...

Curious if any of you have opinions about Sortainers vs Shop-made wood boxes with transparent acrylic fronts.

I built a sysport a number of years ago and decided to make it deeper than required by the systainers and used normal single extension blum style drawer glides.  They extended far enough that the systainers could be fully opened and I used the extra space to behind the systainers to store stuff I rarely needed to get like boxes of sandpaper, etc.

Making it deeper gave me extra stability (mine is on casters) for the approx 6' tall sysport as well as extra storage space.  It's worked out very well for me and would do it the same way again.

Regarding the LR32 and the new Sys³: just make a second set of holes to have 16mm intervals instead of the standard 32. That allows you to waste less space between systainers.
I've used the same to fix the issue with the T-Loc size II (which was a 1.5 iteration of the standard 105mm spacing) that often times throws off 32mm sysport designs.

I make my Sys-AZ cabinets with hole spacing at 16mm to give me the option of more density with the Systainer sizes varying.

I also use Sys-AZ drawers alone for shallow storage.

I do use the Sortainers and have a wall of them.  I like the ability to take them out and carry them to job sites when needed.  Removing a drawer is really easy.  Slight raised ridge at the back keeps them from pulling fully out.

I’d definitely size for the Sys-AZ personally.  I had hand made drawers and really like the SysAZ due to the ability to have them lock closed as well as the option of adding labels on the front.

Nice design!

And welcome to FOG!
