WOW, and I'm hesitant to buy an MFT because of the $600 price tag!!!

Those tables are the absolute best.  I love my MFT for working with wood, but when I am welding/fabricating, the grid pattern works so well for the same reasons as the MFT.  On the one I use, the holes are threaded so you can bolt things to the top to hold them in place.  They are really great, and not all cost that much, that example is VERY thick!
