Short story, new member here avid woodworker all my life.  Lost my job in finance three years ago and family has been struggling ever since.  Trying to remake myself in carpentry/home improvement.  We're living temporarily with family members in less than comfortable situation.  My son asked me if we could build a desk of sorts to fit in the corner of his small room.  Desk would be used for reading and writing, not computers (he has separate workstation for that).  I'd like to come up with a project that he and I can work on together.  Have fairly good amount of tiger maple, black walnut, chestnut and cherry boards sitting in the shed just waiting for a project...  Maple ranges from 5/4 to 8/4 board.  Most everything else is 4/4 aside from a few 8/4 cutoffs in Black Walnut.

Hopefully situation is temporary. Would like to be able to use whatever we build in another house.

Any thoughts and suggestions much appreciated.  Thanks guys!

when I look for project ideas there are 2 sites for my togo places. One is Pinterest has nice photos of different designs the other is AnaWhite.com she has plans and videos of all sorts of projects that are free.
Wish I could be more helpful.
Hopefully things will change for the better for you.

This is a little reading desk I made for my son a couple of years ago (occupied by his little sister in the picture). It gives a sense of private space without being too bulky and blocking light. It is easily moved too. You may need to scale up a little to suite your son, and the little desk would need to be a bit deeper for writing. The joints were done with dominos and it is quite rigid. Just an idea.

Nice!  Guess I should have said my son is 13 thinking something more traditional with nice joinery.
