Tool points

Can someone explain tool points to me please....

Tool Points are a reward system Festool offers, accumulate enough point and you receive some sort of a discount or free product.  I'm unfamiliar with which countries participate or what the rewards are exactly since it's not available here in the US.  I'm sure someone on your side of the pound can give you more details.

If festool has a "tools for profit" program in you country, the points you gather by buying tools during the course of a year get added up, and you get a gift cheque that can be spent on future festool purchases.

My understanding is that this is limited to European countries, except the UK, but I dont know if they get them in NAINA land?

In essence as you purchase Festool products you get reward points/ loyalty points and when you save them up you can put them toward another Festool purchase.

As you live here in the UK you get "naff all!"

Guy

Same here. As you have stated in the rest of the world you get "naff all" :)

Sucks really. Can it be that hard to inplement the "tools for profit?" I guess I could sort of understand it here because we are a third world country (To be honest this is just an excuse. I don't really see how this system can be cheated) but why not in the UK? It's odd.

You get toolpoints when you are registered within the Festool Tools For Profit program. This program has a couple of benefits, however, in my opinion, the toolpoints are not one of them.

The biggest benefits are:

1 - You get a new machine when yours is stolen.
2 - 30 days money back guarantee when you buy a new machine.

These befits can be very useful. But the toolpoints themselves are worth too little to be of any real value.

Judge for yourself.

How much are your toolpoints worth?

100 to 150 TP= 10 Eurocent per TP
150 to 300 TP= 30 Eurocent per TP
300 to 450 TP= 50 Eurocent per TP
450 plus        = 70 Eurocent per TP

So lets say you want to get more than 450 toolpoints to make them worth the most. Let it be noted that the toolpoints need to be acquired within 1 year. Stay below 100 toolpoints and they are worth zilch, nada, nothing.

One Rotex 150 FEQ will get you 35 toolpoints. And it will cost you 577 euro. So if you want to get 450 toolpoints, you'll need to buy no less than 13 Rotex's in 1 year. That will net you 455 toolpoints which at a rate of 70 cent have a total worth of 318 euro. But don't forget that 13 Rotex's for 577 euro a piece cost you a total of 7501 euro.

So basically, if you are willing to buy 7500 euro of Festools in one year you get a DTS400  for free.

318 is 4% of 7500. So at the highest rate of toolpoints you get a 4% discount. When you have less than 450 toolpoints your toolpoints are worth even less. Toolpoints are a joke. What retailer considers 4% discount a benefit to his clients? What client considers 4% a discount worth bothering for?

And that was the highest rate. Lets look at the lowest rate. Buy 3 Rotex's, get 3 x 35 = 105 toolpoints, worth 10 cents each. You've just invested 577 x 3 = 1731 euro and you get 105 x 0.10 = 10.5 euro worth of toolpoints. This is the same price as a single 10 pack of sandpaper. Your discount is a whopping 0.57 %. Personally, a firm handshake from the dealer is even worth more to me than a 0.57 % discount.

Was adding up my toolpoints lately and reached a total of 202. For sure I'd like to score a little over 300, but don't have a lot to wish for anymore.  [laughing]

Does anyone know where to find a list of Festools stating the toolpoints you're getting for it? Still need 98 points to get to 300 and get a 150 Euro discount on something that will pop up on my wishlist. Since there is a big difference in ratio of the amount of toolpoints you're getting for your Euro's (dealer and promotion dependable off course), I'd like to know what piece(s) of equipment will get me my 98 points as fast as possible.

Domino DF 500Q  -32 toolpoints/EUR 849=0.0377 toolpoints per Euro
Trion PS 300EQ    -29 toolpoints/EUR 246=0.1178 toolpoints per Euro
RTS 400EQ            -21 toolpoints/EUR 249=0.0843 toolpoints per Euro
OF 1010 EBQ        -32 toolpoints/EUR 394=0.0812 toolpoints per Euro
Rotex RO125 FEQ  -27 toolpoints/EUR 397=0.0680 toolpoints per Euro
CTL Midi                -22 toolpoints/EUR 336=0.0654 toolpoints per Euro
TS 55 EBQ            -40 toolpoints/EUR 468=0.0854 toolpoints per Euro.
(Prices are without VAT.)

Assuming that I would get a ratio as high as the Trion; I'd need to spend about 832 Euro's more for the 300. As low as the Domino would require a 2599 Euro's.

Festfan, here is a toolpoints generator from the German site. I haven't found a list. They used to put the toolpoints on the old Festool site, but with the new design the toolpoints are no longer mentioned.

http://wwwtfp.my-tts.com/soap-0.6.6/mediandoweb/index.php?sTemplateFile=templates_toolpoints.php

Make sure you type the name/number correctly. You can enter the type of tool or you can search for a specific amount of toolpoints with the drop down box. Since you need 98, it looks like you're in dire need of a Kapex.

Thanks, just the thing I was looking for.

Now I come to think of it: I always did wanted/needed a Kapex ;)

I am with you Alex. Toolpoints are not just a joke, they're an insult. In 2009 I bought a MFT/3, TS55, OF1010 and RTS400, not an inconsiderable amount of money (for a hobbyist  [tongue]). Got me 149 toolpoints, or 14.90 euro (about US $19). Getting those stamps at the supermarket would end up with a beter return. I felt like a little boy getting a pat on the head and an icecream after mowing the lawn, an acre of lawn.

Really Festool, either get a reward system that makes me feel good, or get rid of it altogether.

I am thinking about starting a thing called Notorious T.O.D. Points.

It goes like this:

1. You give me the money your would normally spend on Festool in a year.
2. I'll take you out back and kick you as hard as I can in your "rocks".
3. After you get back up I'll cheerfully refund you half your Festool money...

...and no I don't know yet where the points come in...

Best,
Todd

I agree, toolpoints are a mockery. However: You don't buy Festools for the points, you buy 'em for the Festools. The points are just a bonus.

I took the liberty to collect all the data that can be obtained from the toolpoint generator and translated the German into English (might be some mishaps in there, neither of them is my native language; the numbers won't fool you though) thus creating a toolpoints overview list. Since it is not possible to upload an Excel sheet, I justed copy/pasted all the data into this post. I think you can copy/paste them straight back into Excel again.

Wait so Americans get half of the "Tools for Profit" thing? Man that is weird, it's like the Germans don't trust them or the Brits. I wonder if Japan is on there  [eek]  [big grin]  [tongue]

But seriously why implement only half of a system?

LOL, ther are so many "why's" in Festool's sales and distribution policy that Agatha Christie could probably fill a couple of her famous mystery novels with them.  [unsure]

Today I received a letter from Festool/Protool in which they announce to stop the Toolpoints programme as per January 1st of 2011. All toolpoints collected in 2010 by members are still current for a Festool voucher to be received in 2011.

They also state that the Tools for Profit club will be disbanded and instead a difference will be made in 'myFestool Services' and 'ProService' for Protool associated products. It remains unclear what this exactly means (two different websites perhaps?).

A promiss is made that substitute benefits, for discontinuing the Toolpoints, are being worked on. It is not mentioned which benefits that could be, only that more information is to follow.

The 1+2 and theft guarantee will remain in place.
