Tool registration questions

I realize the online tool registration program is being worked on with a tentative rollout due sometime next year and my questions are not about that.  I asked Tyler to send me a list of which tools of mine are registered.  Of the 18 tools I currently own, only 3 of them are registered.  I realized the responsibility lies with me. The 3 that were registered were registered by the store that sold them to me. Another 9 were bought from different dealers but not registered.  The other 6 of my tools were bought used from non-dealers. The 18 tools do not include tools that I bought new from dealers and subsequently sold.

1. Is my assumption correct that once the online registration reopens, I can late register the 9 new tools bought from dealers without any warranty penalty?

2. I'm assuming there is a benefit to registering tools beyond the warranty period, namely, recalls and stolen tool ID.  Any other reason?

3. Can I register used tools?  What kind of information is required? I have names of people I bought them from and a rough idea of the date, but what else is needed?  Some of them are still under warranty by date, so do those get treated differently?

4. If the person who I bought the tool from never registered the tool, does that prevent me from registering it?

5. What is the process to register a tool that was bought from an owner who already registered the tool?  Can the original owner of a registered tool transfer the registration to the new owner once sold?  Can the new owner request transfer once purchased?

6. Last one.  What constitutes a tool that is able to be registered?  Is it only those with a serial number? Or those using power?  What about outlier tools such as MFT, guide rails, SYSlite, Domino XL connector kit, VAC SYS VT sort, boom arm, etc?  Are there ever recalls or bulletins on outlier tools?

Some of your questions are ones that are fairly uncommon, so I'll double-check my answers tomorrow. All of these answers apply to the US only.

Yes. Your warranty is based on your purchase date, not your registration date.

At this point, that is about it. It's also good for insurance purchases if there's ever a fire, natural disaster, etc. where you keep your tools. There are plans to provide additional incentives for registering tools, but those are not in place at this time.

Yes. If a tool was originally registered before January 1, 2017, you can register it again using the online registration form. If it was originally purchased after January 1, 2017, please contact our Inside Sales department (dealer@festoolusa.com) about transferring the registration. You'll need the T-Nr, S-Nr and name of the original purchaser.

Warranties are based on the initial tool purchase. For example, if someone purchased a new tool 12 months ago and sold it to you, you would have the remaining 24 months of the warranty. When purchasing a used tool, it's always a good idea to ask if the seller either (a.) registered the tool or (b.) has proof of purchase of the original sale that they can give you.

4. If the person who I bought the tool from never registered the tool, does that prevent me from registering it?

No. You can still register the tool. However, the purchase date should be your best estimate of the original purchase date. When possible, it's in your best interest to get a copy of the original proof of purchase.

Either the buyer or the seller — preferably the seller — should contact Festool USA's Inside Sales department at dealer@festoolusa.com.

A product is categorized as a "tool" if it has a serial number. Festool has three categories of products: tools, accessories, and consumables. Knowing the categories might help make you figure out what's a tool and what isn't'. (The SYSROCK might not seem like a traditional tool, but it definitely isn't an accessory or a consumable.) From a warranty and service standpoint, everything within one category will be treated the same. (In the rare case of a recall, an "outlier" tool like an MFT would be treated the same as a more traditional tool like a sander.)

Most "tools" are fairly obvious — joiners, saws, sander, drills, edge bander, etc. The category also includes anything that can more or less stand on its own — lighting, SYSrock, etc.

I'd consider the "outlier tools" to be the following (and I may miss a few): MFT, CT Dust Extractors, VAC SYS. For the most part, anything design to be used only with a specific tool or limited set of tools — DOMINO connectors, boom arm, guide rails — are accessories. Admittedly, some of these can seem like fairly arbitrary distinctions.
