I already have too many sanders but felt a random orbital function was necessary for some work at home making bedroom doors.

Picked one of these up for 14 quid on ebay as a 'what's that' and have to say I am pretty impressed. it fits onto pretty much any grinder but the forums elsewhere say higher speeds can cause issues as it tends to blow apart at 12000rpm so I used an older 9000rpm makita. I guess if you start and stop on the work piece the revs can be kept sub 12000, I had picked up a new worx grinder on sale at homebase but I guess I'll keep that in its box for while longer.

I was sanding walnut and oak veneered boards and other than being dustier than a proper sander and probably a tad noisier due to being a 20 year old (at least) grinder the results are excellent, I don't use them enough but many on other woodworking forums claim the results are better than normal sanders, maybe due to the higher speeds.

well worth it IMO.

I'd imagine a variable speed grinder would be the thing to have. Tho they don't seem easy to find at a reasonable price
