TS55 Power issue warranty

Im new to fog, i bought the ts55r before christmas and use it to cut 18mm panels and mdf. I recently tried cutting the end of a door and about 200mm into the cut i lost about 90% power so unplugged and left idle for an hour as i could smell burning from the motor. When i turned the power back on a puff of smoke or dust came out of the saw and it seems to be running at full power again but i was afraid to use it again so just put it back in the box. Would i be covered under warranty or is this a common problem or should i try using it again. If anyone could help me out with a bit of advice i would really appreciate it, wayne

Hi Wayne,

What vac were you using with the saw and what hose?

How much mileage has your saw blade done?

Did you see a lot of dust in the air doing the cut just before the saw stopped?

Were there burn marks on the cut face of the wood?

Just a thought:  loss of power, burning smell, and puff of dark smoke could be an indication of worn brushes.

Just contact FESTOOL service.  It appears that your saw is under warranty and smoke coming from the motor is not a good thing.

If you pulled it out of the box and it did all that, then putting it back in the box may not help.
It could be brushes breaking in, or God know what... But I would use that saw like there is no tomorrow for a while and if it is is not working then send it in.

Right now it is like Schrödinger's cat.

I wasnt using a vac with it, i only bought it around christmas time so its under warranty but im worried they might say its my own fault. I only use the saw sparingly so the blade should be good. Its my first festool and i have all my tools as a carpenter at least 10 to 15 years and look after them and dont abuse them so this came as a bit of a surprise to me, thanks for the replies

The only speculation that I could make about your description of the door cut is that you bound-up the blade and burned the motor.  This is a rather unlikely scenario for someone with your experience.

Hi Wayne

It should be very difficult to damage the saw by over working it. Not having the dust collected could make it work a fraction harder.

As one of the posters above mentioned, give the saw a bit more work to do and see if it still not right. If that is the case call Festool and get it looked at under warranty.

Surprised no one has asked what the type/thickness of the door was and what blade you were using to trim it? The TS 55R comes with a 48T blade which isn't ideal for that sort of job, and combined with the possible materials, could be why it was struggling.

It was a 44mm softwood door and i was using the blade which came with the saw

Without extraction, and with the 48T blade, it's possible it was binding due to chips not evacuating fully. Although not ideal, you shouldn't really have an issue cross cutting a 44mm softwood door with the TS 55R and that blade though, so if you're still having problems, might be worth a chat with Festool Service.

Could there have been nails in said door?  If you were trimming the bottom, not sure if it had a sweep of decorative plate and maybe some metal was in the door and you found it with the blade.

No there were no nails in the door, i know what your saying as i have worked on lots of doors which had nails or pins but this one had none at all.

Don't baby the thing. It may not be the most powerful saw in the size, but it is of no use unless used.

I doubt I would use a rip blade on a crosscut, so I see no real problem there. Plus I am usually too lazy to change blades just for sport.

If it smokes out, then send it in, otherwise make it work.

Cutting the bottom of a door off is likely to actually be a rip cut for most of the cut, if it's actually a solid wood door.

While it may be true, my laziness is why I got a saw with 1400W.  [embarassed]

It is also not uncommon for some tools to have a break in for brushes, so I am unconvinced that the OP's saw is problematic.

I am still enamoured with the Schrödinger's cat reference with respect to putting it back into the systainer.  [cool]
So using it for a while is the best way to determine if it is getting better, worse, or remaining the same.

Used it again to cut 25mm mdf and seemed fine until the 5th or 6th rip, its as if the speed of the saw drops to the lowest setting but doesnt cut out completely. Gave it a minute or two and used it again and it worked fine for the last two rips. Doubt that anyone else has the same problem so it must be faulty. Might send it back now
