My friend who owns the CNC did all that and I don't really know much about it. I know it's not exact, he made some mods. He made holes for threaded inserts and holes for big washers at exact points, so when you screw together it is perfectly flat. I sanded it for five minutes after assembly and my six foot stabila shows no light, Eric

Wayne, you could take your time breaking it down and do it in seven minutes. At first I was gonna use a drill chucked with a 1/2" socket to turn the two bolts that keep it together, but later opted to go with a 1/4 20 star knob. I just wanted to be able to do it if no drill or 1/2 socket were around. The screwing in of the bolt is the longest part though. The best part of this bench for me is when my wife comes home and we are getting a Nor Easter, the bench can move and she can park there. You know how women get when they don't get there way? Eric

Do you mean you cannot hide in there? [poke]

I used 3/4 ply on all the endcaps and stretchers and 1/2 on the tops and bottoms.

I was wondering what type of ply did you use on top and bottom? Is it a 1/2 inch (or 12mm Birch ply) and it looks as if it is pre finished, or you just used some oil on it (if so  which one?)

I am in the process of making a workbench with the 20mm grid top and debating on what to use ( definitely not MDF since sagging is pretty bad, and after owning a MFT for 9 month, in the center I had a sag of 3/16).

Thanks!

The top is 1/2 MDF and the bottom is 1/2 HD Maple ply. The sides, endcaps, and spreaders are 3/4 HD Maple ply. The torsion box structure of rabbets and dadoes makes the unit super stiff, so 1/2 on the top wont sag. I finished with LenMars Moisture Cured Urethane with a foam pad.

Update: the bench was worth every penny, Eric

Eric,
Impressive work. Not to get too basic on you, but where did you get the large aluminum square you are using with your guide rail in the first few pictures? I can find one that size. Thanks

That was a Woodpeckers One Time Only Run. It has revolutionized my track saw cutting abilities. If they come out with it again, buy two, Eric
